On second thought you might have been double-creeped. Just make sure you setup your bisnack.

A shotgun (I recomend a 12 Gauge pump) is perfectly legal in NYS. I'd say most homes (well, over 50%) in Upstate New York have a rifle and/or a shotgun.

In Upstate NY there's no license and no registration for shotguns/long guns - you can even transport one from PA to NY (following Federal Transport regulations).

I lived in New York State about a third of my life and (as long as it's legal for you to possess a firearm) it's perfectly legal to keep any shotgun (with an 18" or longer bbl, or rifle with 16" or longer bbl) on your property/home - loaded if you like.

However, if you reside within NYC (5 Burroughs) you do have to 'register' long guns - but there is still no license requirement for long guns.

No Castle Doctrine laws... One of the many reasons I escaped that lunatic asylum of a State.

Still: kill an intruder with a baseball bat or a shotgun - as far as the law cares, it won't matter which.

And, like you said: gun vs. bat - gun wins.

Personally, I'd rather be alive and (potentially) facing charges than dead (or worse). But, you know, that's just me.
