Two completly different guns
Im thinking caliber here not type of weapon. Who would choose .357 and who would choose .45. If you like consider both in either revolver or auto. das

Re: Two completly different guns
I am assuming you mean .357 magnum and .45 acp ? It's kind of hard to take type of gun out of the equation for me. To me, the only reason I would have a .45 acp in revolver would be because I also have a .45 acp in an auto. I believe there was an auto pistol in .357 magnum at one time, but I don't recall seeing/hearing anything about them lately (maybe out of production ?).
.357 magnum has better ballistics numbers than .45 acp, but they're not too far apart.
Of course, it depends on what you want out of the weapon. Home defense, hunting, carry, target shooting.
So, in auto my answer would be .45 and in revolver my answer would be .357.Last edited by jtwalker; February 1st, 2010 at 10:27 AM.

Based on the criteria of the OP, I would choose .45acp.

Re: Two completly different guns
I have owned a few of all the above. Really depends what you want to do with it. I carry a .45 ACP (pistol) , and would use a .357 magnum (revolver) for hunting. I really don't enjoy shooting a .357, even out of a heavy revolver - to me it has a very sharp recoil, and I think for SD it overpenetrates way too much.
The .45 ACP does not have the power for hunting, but it is a proven defence round and less of a penetration problem with good hollow points.
I own several .45 ACP's, no .357's at the moment.
Just my opinion - I am certain someone else thinks otherwise.

They sure are so I'm not really sure what you're asking.
If you're choosing one gun and have a limited budget the main question is what is it for: Want the wife to have protection while you work graveyard shift? Home intruder in the middle of the night with low light and thin walls? Concealed carry all day? Mostly target shooting? Hunting?
I have both calibers mentioned. I mainly shoot .38spl in the revolver due to the cost of ammo.

45 acp It's just what I prefer for CC and home defense.

.357 magnum....revolvers are the better weapon for my tastes.

Re: Two completly different guns
First choice for me is influenced by the fact that I love taking my kids to the range. Therefore, I would (an do) roll with the .357 Mag so a revolver set up for that round shoots .38 special for the kids.
If I lived alone, I would have a nice 1911 shooting .45 ACP right now.
Situation dictates which I would prefer because I'm a practical guy like that. As for which for self-defense... whichever I could afford to shoot more frequently so I could have a better chance at good shot placement."The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism.
