Re: Whats a good home defence 12g load
Cabelas has lead BB's which should still provide enough penetration to be lethal without the penetration of 00 buck.
You could also try any of the 'heavy' nontoxic's in BB, BBB or T shot as well as no's 3 or 4 buck.
Personally I would go for the 3 or 4 buck.

Naaaaaaaaaaah No over penatration inside a house there! GET REAL To the original poster, ask your self whats the furthest shot you'll take inside your home in defence of your self or family? In my case it would be 40 ft. max. in the basement! maybe 25 upstairs. Now get two sheets of 1/2" drywall and shoot at them with several sizes of shot shells and see what goes through or not. Maybe not a "tacticool" choice but your standard game load of#4 or #6 shot or the like will stop mr. bad person just as well as anything else at inside the home distances! which are most likely to be 20-25 ft. in real life situations .

Re: Whats a good home defence 12g load
Anything that will sufficiently penetrate a clothed human so as to reliably and instantaneously incapacitate him (i.e. to prevent him from shooting back) will most likely also penetrate at least 4-5 layers of dry wall.
IMHO, your best bet is to plan out your defensive positions and safest lines of site/fire ahead of time, and use a load that is almost guaranteed to take down an intruder in one shot (00 buck) so you're less likely to have to worry about taking followup shots at a moving target. Also, using an alarm system may help give you extra time to gather up your loved ones in your defensive position so that you know you'll be shooting away from them when the baddie shows his face.Last edited by rikilii; December 17th, 2009 at 06:25 PM.
