Re: What handguns are legal to carry hunting?
Firearms - Handguns: A Sportsman’s Firearms permit or a License
to Carry Firearms is required to carry a handgun, or have in a motor
vehicle. Licenses to Carry Firearms permits are issued by county sheriffs
or the Philadelphia Chief of Police. The License to Carry Firearms
permit only entitles bowhunters or spotlighters, for instance, to
carry firearms that fall within this classification. County treasurers
issue Sportsman’s Firearms Permits. A person holding a Sportsman’s
Firearms Permit may not carry a concealed handgun or a loaded
handgun in a vehicle, and may not carry a handgun while
bowhunting or spotlighting.

Re: What handguns are legal to carry hunting?
I have a Sportsmans Permit, i had it before i got my LTCF. You can only carry a Revolver with a Sportsmans permit ,but with a LTCF you can carry a semi-auto or a revolver while hunting.
Sportsmans Permit can only be used while hunting, fishing trappoing or training dogs and MUST have a valid Fishing,Hunting furtaking or dog training license to go with the Sportsmans permit.
LTCF covers it all i didnt know that till after i got my Sportsmans Permit.

Re: What handguns are legal to carry hunting?
Briefly,
LTCF: Allows you to carry a handgun concealed upon your person, loaded in a vehicle, or openly in a city of the first class (Philadelphia). As a hunter it allows you to carry a handgun concealed upon your person while hunting, fishing, trapping, dog training, bow hunting or spotlighting (with the appropriate license). However, if the handgun is a semi-automatic, you cannot use it for anything other than self defense (you cannot use any semi automatic to do anything to any wildlife, even to dispatch a wounded animal). You get this from your county sheriff or the Chief of Police in Philadelphia. With this you can carry a self defense handgun concealed or your hunting handgun concealed under your hunting clothes.
Sportsman's Permit: Allows you to carry a handgun concealed upon your person while you are hunting, fishing, trapping, dog training, but NOT bowhunting or spotlighting. It does not allow you to have the handgun loaded in your vehicle while traveling to or from the hunting area. You ge this from you county treasurer. With this you really don't want to carry a semi-automatic as you can't legally huntwith it, and getting the SP is typically so that you can carry your hunting handgun under your hunting coat (concealed).
33.118. Pennsylvania sportsman’s firearm permit.
...This permit, granting exemption to section 6106(a) of the act, is issued in conjunction with a hunting, furtaking or fishing license, or permit relating to hunting dogs, under section 6106(b)(9) and (10) and (c) of the act.
(6106. Firearms not to be carried without a license.)
Just remember, if you are going to carry while hunting, and think you might want to try a shot with your handgun, it better be a revolver or single shot. No matter what, a semi-auto is not allowed.Last edited by Xringshooter; December 5th, 2009 at 10:11 PM.

Re: What handguns are legal to carry hunting?
No where in the PACS 6106(b) does it say that.
The SP is an "exception" to being able to carry concealed, on or about your person OR in a vehicle (PACS 6106).
§ 6106. Firearms not to be carried without a license.
(a) Offense defined.--
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), any person who
carries a firearm in any vehicle or any person who carries a
firearm concealed on or about his person, except in his place
of abode or fixed place of business, without a valid and
lawfully issued license under this chapter commits a felony
of the third degree.
(b) Exceptions.--The provisions of subsection (a) shall not
apply to:
(9) Persons licensed to hunt, take furbearers or fish in
this Commonwealth, if such persons are actually hunting,
taking furbearers or fishing as permitted by such license, or
are going to the places where they desire to hunt, take
furbearers or fish or returning from such places.
(10) Persons training dogs, if such persons are actually
training dogs during the regular training season.
(c) Sportsman's firearm permit.--
(1) Before any exception shall be granted under
paragraph (b)(9) or (10) of this section to any person 18
years of age or older licensed to hunt, trap or fish or who
has been issued a permit relating to hunting dogs, such
person shall, at the time of securing his hunting, furtaking
or fishing license or any time after such license has been
issued, secure a sportsman's firearm permit from the county
treasurer. The sportsman's firearm permit shall be issued
immediately and be valid throughout this Commonwealth for a
period of five years from the date of issue for any legal
firearm, when carried in conjunction with a valid hunting,
furtaking or fishing license or permit relating to hunting
dogs. The sportsman's firearm permit shall be in triplicate
on a form to be furnished by the Pennsylvania State Police.
The original permit shall be delivered to the person, and the
first copy thereof, within seven days, shall be forwarded to
the Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police by the
county treasurer. The second copy shall be retained by the
county treasurer for a period of two years from the date of
expiration. The county treasurer shall be entitled to collect
a fee of not more than $6 for each such permit issued, which
shall include the cost of any official form. The Pennsylvania
State Police may recover from the county treasurer the cost
of any such form, but may not charge more than $1 for each
official permit form furnished to the county treasurer.Last edited by Steve in PA; December 5th, 2009 at 11:48 PM.

Re: What handguns are legal to carry hunting?
I was completely misinformed. These are some pretty mixed up laws. It would seem the best approach is to get a LTC in PA in order to have the most options.
