Better buy your BIG screen TV now...
This could easily become reality in the entire US.
http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/200911...rnia_tv_energy
On a unanimous vote, the California Energy Commission required all new televisions up to 58 inches to be more energy efficient, beginning in 2011. The requirement will be tougher in 2013, with only a quarter of all TVs currently on the market meeting that standard

Can you imagine all of the electricity that could be saved if one of those huge ass office buildings in Cali would require all of it lights to be turned out?
Maybe they should pass legislation requiring all office buildings to update to those heat/moition sensitive on/off switches.

Hmm, how about a solution to energy AND obesity - make handicapped persons the only ones allowed to use elevators.

So if it was made before 2011 would it be grandfathered in, will you have to get it registered with the local PD as a preban?

Re: Better buy your BIG screen TV now...
Now they are trying to legislate the rules of physics. The best 42" out there uses 262 watts. The switching power supply in that unit is the most efficient that can be designed with known technology; it is well over 90% efficient, incredible by power transfer standards.
You can't fire up a screen that size with any less power by simple virtue of the number of PN junctions that need to be biased.
Now they are talking 160 watts; less than three 60-watt light bulbs. That isn't enough to energize the screen itself, let alone run the computer and audio amps in the set.
When I was a kid, it was not at all unusual for a 25 inch color TV to use as much as 1000 watts...about 8 amperes.
Now we have sets that hang on the wall, have superb pictures, and use less power than a couple of light bulbs...hell, your computer alone uses more power than that TV."...a REPUBLIC, if you can keep it."
