Driggs boy shoots bear on family's porch

An 11-year-old boy killed a bear at point-blank range last Wednesday night after it wouldn't leave his family's porch.

The boy was at his home near Driggs with his younger sisters and after seeing the bear on the front porch and not being able to get it to leave, the boy retrieved a gun and killed the animal.

The family declined to comment and wished to remain anonymous.

Fish and Game Conservation Officer Doug Petersen said the black bear had been a problem in the area near the county transfer station, and he and Fish and Game Officer Lauren Wednt had set up a trap earlier in the week.

"The bear had been hanging around and we got multiple complaint calls," said Wendt. The bear had been getting into garbage cans and bird feeders in the area.

Petersen said officials may have had to put it down anyway. He said that in situations where the bear has been a problem around humans or threatens human safety, they usually don't issue citations.

"Human safety is a higher priority," said Petersen. "We're concerned with how bears are managed and we want to live in harmony with them."

The boy and his family are not in any trouble, and Petersen said he issued them a permit to keep the bear. Usually when a bear is put down by Fish and Game they sell the hide at a state auction, Petersen said. Petersen said the family reported the bear Thursday morning. Fish and Game trapped and euthanized another problem black bear about two weeks ago, after the bear reportedly let himself into a home. Petersen said it's normal for the animals to move from higher elevations this time of year.

"We don't like to see them down this low," said Petersen. "But it's not uncommon."

You provide food for them, then call them a nuisance...

It won't leave the food you leave out, so you poach it....

The food that is provided is not for them. I just can't seem to get that across to them.

Poaching is when they are killed illegally. As in the article, the shoot was lawful. They even gave the Family a "permit"

I'm kinda confused here......

I see this no different than someone who lives in Elk country, and kills an Elk, because it was eating their garden.......

ETA: The article says the bear was on the front porch, and the 12 yo, retrieved a firearm, was said firearm stored outside the home, or were they inside??

I totally agree with Fingers on this one.
One of the reasons we (my husband & I) had moved to Pa is for our love of wildlife.
We totally understood that bears are going to be in our area.
Actually, we see them all the time in our yard. They don't make any threats to us, even if we are outside.

Sure I got a bit pissy, when one had stolen my suet cage that I had hanging out there for the woodpeckers, but I got over it.
Sure I get a bit pissy when they attack my garbage and have to clean up the mess, but again I get over it. Actually as I'm cleaning it up I'm usually saying (stupid bear as I'm giggling).
But what we ENJOY the most is looking & being amazed by their beauty.

We have learned how to deal with our bears.
1. Don't put out bird food while the bears are searching for food, before they hibernate.
2. Block the garbage can, which makes it hard to get into.
3. If worse comes to worse, if your able to catch them before they get into your garbage bin, just light off a firecracker, let me tell ya, they run really fast...lol

My concern is, where were the parents when this 11yo had went for a gun?
If the parents were home, did they allow this to happen?
I have children and I would be very concerned if they even attempted to grab any of our guns.

Wildlife is cool by me, I have racoons , bears, etc, tear open my bear box at night when I put the trash out, so I started putting it out 6am the day it gets picked up instead of the night before.

But if I see one of them big bastards on my porch, I'm shooting it also, I'm not gonna wait for him to break into my house.

PA only has Black Bears.

Extremely unlikely to attack, unless a mother with cubs,( usually warmer months), or injured,or sick...
