    Article
    Springfield Model 1855 Pistol

    Date
    Circa 1856

    Maker
    Springfield

    Caliber
    0.58

    Description
This Pistol Is An Excellent Example Of The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine And Is One Of Only Three Pistols Produced In Quantity At The Springfield Armory; The Other Two Being The Model 1817 Flintlock Pistol And The Model 1911. (A Shoulder Stock [Not Shown] Was Produced For This Hefty Pistol So That It Could Be Used As A Carbine, But Very Few Of Those Shoulder Stocks Survive.) This Fine-Grained Walnut Stock Retains A Visible Cartouche Opposite The Lock Plate. The Lock Plate Is Marked “U.S. Springfield” With An Eagle On The Maynard Tape Primer Door, And “1856” On The Tail. The Inspection Proofs On The Side Of The Barrel Are Clear. The Rear Lanyard Ring Is Original, But The Forward Sling Swivel Has Been Removed, Possibly To Allow The Pistol To Fit In A Holster. The Top Of The Barrel Is Stamped “C.S.A. - N.C.” We Cannot Authenticate These Markings, Although They Appear To Be Old. We Know That At The Time North Carolina Seceded From The Union The Governor Of The State Seized Along With Its Contents The Federal Arsenal At Fayetteville, Which Was Offered To Jefferson Davis And The Confederate Government. The Contents Of The Arsenal Included Muskets, Rifles, And Several Hundred Springfield Model 1855 Pistols
