Default december 19th, 2009, a date to fry a turkey....

    official planning thread:

at this point a few things seem pretty solid.
the date will be december the 19th, and we will start the process of range rental.

things to think about posting here.

    1. planning on attending? number of guests with you?

we will be renting the range, therefore there is no limit on the number of nonclub members that can come....and shoot.
    range rental confirmed.

    2. willing to contribute anything to cause? which is not necessary to attend.
a "tip" jar will be about should anybody feel the holiday spirit.

it's still plenty early in the process, and there's hardly a head count yet. so there are plenty of things on the table, that could get put on the table...
about the only sure things right now are one bird and it's bath tub.
the club has a grill on sight, though we need to supply it's fuel.

for those not familar with the range. it has six stations under roof...sorta.
2x 25yrd, this range can be anywhere from 2-20yrds as long as no other ranges are in use.
    2x 50yrd
    2x100yrd
pretty much any gun goes, though not selective fire.
.50cal center fires are still permitted last i heard.
safe handling is REQUIRED along with a pocketful of common sense.
one rule that is strongly enforced is limiting rapid fire to three round "bursts".

as things envolve this thread will be updated.

we do this a few times a year and every time it gets better and better.
for chill'n at a range, the food is pretty bang'n.

    1. mauser +3: fuel, fryer. pumpkin, apple pies.

    2. fingers80002: oil for fryer, broccoli salad.

    3. dex: turkey and range rental.

    4. tdyoung: take up slack closer to the date.

    5. shadowcat187: deep fryable starch, plasticware.

    6. nijwnfi: take up slack closer to date.

The bird bath and one bird is confirmed. Brad is donating the bird and I have the kettle lined up.
We will need to get 3-4 gallons of cooking oil. The most often recommended is peanut oil because of it's higher smoke point, better flavor and reusability. (If reusability wasn't a word before today, it is now).
Peanut oil is also more expensive than "regular" cooking oil. It looks like we're going to cook with it for one afternoon and reusability shouldn't be an issue.
I'm in favor of looking at Horning's or some other discount grocery place for regular cooking oil with a high smoke point to save several $$ unless anyone has a strong objection to that.

We need to have some sort of RSVP list so we know how much grub to have on hand.

We need a list of who will supply what to embellish our turkey feast. (Looking for side dishes here). Maybe potatoes of some sort. French fries and turkey? Why not? We'll have hot oil, how about onion rings?
How about some vegetables to either deep fry or eat raw. Someone told me that eer batter dipped vegetables cooked in a deep fryer are GOOD.

If something cooked or 'needs to be served hot but not deep fried' shows up (like mashed potatoes, cheese salsa dip, or who knows what) I have a buffet type warmer that will keep things hot until they're consumed.

If anyone feels that turkey between Thanksgiving and Christmas is too much turkey, speak up now. We can easily have burgers and hot dogs or other "non-holiday" food on hand along with our de-feathered volunteer.

I'll get an email off to make sure there's no conflict with renting that day.

I will supply the fuel for the bird bath and the grill, (if we actually need the grill).

Feel free to interject any comments or suggestions.

If you show up and something doesn't suit you, don't blame us, here's your chance to offer your suggestions.

Turkey and Broccoli, now that's a gas

I'll wait and pick up some slack for what's needed closer to the day

But I know for sure you can't have turkey without Pecan Pie

I'm with TD on this, whatever is needed, I'll help fill in the void. Garth was concerned about hunting season due to last year. Jim, be sure to let him know Ruffled Grouse is the only thing in season in our district. I'll seal the deal Fri eve if you all are OK with that. I'll see if Condo the grill man is available. He is master of the grill.
