There have been times in my past when I had to have the serivce shut off.
The phone company had informed me that in case of an emergency that I was still able to dail 911 but wasn't able to use the phone for anything else.
I'm just going by what they had said, not that I ever had to use it...lol

Correct. It doesn`t work on a disconnected out of service landline.

You would have to have a dial tone. Perhaps as a safety they have a way of leaving a 911 only set up. If the wires are disconnected though it can`t happen.

Right, if their no are wires set up, it doesn't work.
I'm guessing because I had children in the house, they had left 911 set up in case I had needed it.

i was diagnosed with cancer six months ago and truly did live off nothing for a few months and it sux it was a blessing when the food stamps cash and ss picked up and i could get my two children what they needed but free phones is bull shit they should be happy they get anything these people make everyone else think im a dead beat or living off the goverment when they could get a job and work where as i cannot it just makes me mad

Nah, that doesn't make you a dead beat, its their for people who truely need it.

What gets me ticked off are the women, who claim the "man" had left the household and are no longer are getting an income, when in fact the "man" never did leave the house and is working under the table. Then they have the nerve to brag to you, about all they are doing and how much they are spoiling themselves & the kids, and to boot end up driving a car way better than the most of us could afford.

Mean while I'm busy working my @ss off, trying to give my family what they need, I sometimes going without just to make it possible.

BUT... Social Services doesn't actually do a house call to check to see, for themselves that what the people are claiming are true.

As far as I know for the cash assistance, they have to go a program that is a class for 8hrs a day all week, to learn how to get a job.
They have to do that, until they are able to get a job.
I don't see how they are able to get a job, if they are spending all their time at that program.
Things just don't make any sense.
I also don't see why children "need" to have a cell phone.
Also, even if you have a house phone that isn't even hooked up with service, your still able to call 911.
What is this world coming to......

Nope. You go and apply. If you don't have an income, you probably qualify.

First of all......I don't think you are a deadbeat that lives of the government. You didn't ask to get sick but a lot of people are judgmental. Kids don't need a cell phone paid for by hardworking and taxpaying citizen.
I have however one thing to say about people that are very fast with their judgment when they see an article like this. You won't get a phone like that when you are on food stamps. They look at your background, and your eligibility is based on what they have in their system about you.
If you receive a phone through "safelink" then you are eligible for that. This means that you have "No Other" means to get in touch with police, ambulances, doctors etc etc.

People that need a phone like that should get one.....FREE........ain't it bad enough already that they have to apply for one? The majority of people that apply for one lost about everything they had to lose in life. How many people had foreclosures?.............they did not ask for that.

Part of the program provides cell phones for kids who don't have them.

I'm not looking at the link. The TV commercials piss me off as it is.

I curently have zero income, and I'll need to pay $20 for a 60 min/3 mo. air card for MY Tracfone in a few weeks or I lose my service.

I wonder if those who are "entitled" to the free phones have to buy Ramen noodles to eat like I just did.

I don't know about most of you folks, but when my Stepdad was hurt a few years ago and when I was still living at home and in high school and 5 of us were living off my Mom's low-income we were ALL seriously embarrassed to use food stamps to buy food.
