Im sure as hell not inclined to make excuses for idiot reporters but if you read the article, the " dont pack heat " line seems to be coming from the guy that was interviewed , not the reporter himself .

this is what is listed on the appalachiantrail.org site i love the whistle may scare.... yeah your out in the middle of no where the whistle will scare no one

Well the law will come into effect next year to allow carry on natl park lands according to the rules of the state the park is in. Also parts of the App Trail are in natl forests, state parks, and so on. With the natl park law you will be able to hike in all of PA on the App Trail while carrying (if there is any in PA actually in a designated natl park).

The guy on that site sounds like a devoted Bradyite idiot. I also feel his words are insulting to those who are avid hikers. He makes it sound like all hikers are stupid stoners or something. Like " hey man, like wooooow, I am packin heat today cuz a bears and weirdos and shit, uhhhh huhhhhh, aren't I like soooooo coooool man?"

And what's this shit about the "culture of the trail"? Oh wait, the hikers are mostly like the mountain bikers out west who say they will use their bike to try to fend off a bear or cougar attack? So is this guy saying the "culture of the trail" is a bunch of pussies? Wow, is that something to be proud about, being pussies? Even a hippy dippy can be pro gun you douchbag. Is this guy from Boulder CO or some other yuppie- hippie haven?

What the fucks wrong with some people?

Imagine how things would be if Lewis and Clark decided to take whistles instead of weapons on their hike???

No need to get bent out of shape over these clowns. Self reliance is not something that can be debated, you either subscribe or you do not. I do not plan on coming running too fast if I hear a fucking whistle.
