    Question Cryogenics for your barrel?

    Cryogenics for your barrel?

I doubt I'd bother with it but I'd enjoy reading the theory and discussion.

Where I once worked we were building our own tooling to cut plastic sheets for safety face shields. The theory was that the tooling would wear better and last longer. We could never prove this out because welds would break or the tooling would be damaged due to operator neglect.

It's quite funny that you doubt it or wouldn't bother with it. Most of the top barrel makers stress relieve their barrels through this method, or something very similar. Krieger "cryo's" every single one of their barrels. I'm not sure what it necessarily does for the hardness, but I've heard from lots of people that know that it greatly reduces the stress from the barrel. On a cut rifled barrel like a Krieger, that stress is minimal; but in barrels that are hammer forged or button rifled, I'm sure it could make a fair bit of difference.

I'm not familiar with that company necessarily, but the process in general is used by all the top barrel makers. So that's fine if you wouldn't bother with it, but the people that are serious about precision, accuracy and consistency cryo their barrels.

Sounds pretty interesting... I just wonder how much it costs. I never buy from a company that doesn't list prices. If they make me contact them for a price quote, I don't buy from them.

Many people choose to have their musical instruments cryo-ed. They say it helps make the tone better. I could not bring myself to have a $5000 saxophone photogenically frozen... to much at risk. I know lots of race teams have their engine parts cryo-ed.
