Default Colorado Sheriff: "Boy Scout Shooting Range is Terrorist Camp"

The Sheriff is a elected office, they may want to re-call this SOB! ~Lambo

    http://www.warrifles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43698

Ok, this is a local Colorado issue, however, I know many of you aren't the type that would shy away from sending these treasonous bastages an email note or even call them. If you feel like it please do - the tyrant's contact info at the end of the article:

Elbert County Sheriff opposed to local shooting: calls Boy Scouts “Hamas”

"It sounded like Hamas had a training camp next door.”

That’s not a quote from US Special Forces in Iraq or Afghanistan. That’s what Elbert County Sheriff William Frangis said about Peaceful Valley Boy Scout camp’s shooting range.

Yes, you read that right: Sheriff Frangis compared a Boy Scout shooting range to terrorists.

Peaceful Valley Boy Scout camp, as well as the western tradition of recreational shooting,n is being attacked by a number of anti-gun liberals, lead by Sheriff Frangis and former Elbert County Commissioner John Dunn. Frangis is a known anti-gun activist and has testified before the legislature time and again in favor of gun control.

Frangis, Dunn and a small collection of screeching liberals want to prevent the Boy Scouts from holding events at the camp’s shooting range. 4-H shooting programs are certainly next.

They’re using the same, tired old arguments to try to shut down the Boy Scouts shooting range, claiming lead contamination and disruption of the environment as justification for their attack on the Second Amendment.

It is vital that gun owners like you and me let Sheriff Frangis and the Elbert County Commissioners know that attacks onthe Second Amendment will not go unnoticed.

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is closely monitoring this situation, but there is something you can do to help!

E-mail or call Sheriff Frangis and the Elbert County Commissioners and tell them to stop their witch hunt against recreational shooting and the Boy Scouts.

    Sheriff William Frangis: (303) 621-2027

    Commissioner Suzie Graeff: (303) 621-3132: suzie.graeff@elbertcounty-co.gov

    Commissioner Hope Goetz: (303) 621-3139: hope.goetz@elbertcounty-co.gov

    Commissioner John Metli: (303) 621-3114: john.metli@elbertcounty-co.gov

Additionally, on July 18th, the Elbert County Commissioners will be meeting to discuss granting Peaceful Valley Scout ranch
a temporary permit to continue shooting activities. The meeting will be held at 215 Comanche Street, Kiowa in the 2nd
floor conference room, and is scheduled from 9:00am-4:30pm. This meeting's agenda hasn’t been published yet, but as soon
as RMGO knows when the shooting issue comes up, we will notify you.

Strong representation from the gun community is vital at this meeting.

He didn't call the Boy Scouts terrorists, he didn't compare them to terrorists, he made a comment on the noise levels coming from their range. You don't like his politics? Don't like that he is trying to shut down a range? Neither do I, but this article is the sort of shameful hatchet job The Washington Post would be proud of.

He could have simply said it sounds like a shooting range, or maybe that is sounds like a military base. Who the hell compares a shooting range to a Hamas training camp. Has he even seen one? I don't know what one sounds like.

Saying a shooting range sounds like a Hamas training camp then trying to shut down it down for "lead" reasons is more transparent than some of the things the Brady Campaign does.

I could care less if this is a shitty article, because there are only about 3 sentences you need to read that state the facts and drive home the point, He doesn't like guns.

Agreed, but it was a stupid connection to make...he could have easily said "US Army Shooting Range" and not gone for the sensationalist impact.

    Scouts' firing range irks residents
Neighbors say clay shooting events disruptive

By Ivan Moreno, Rocky Mountain News
    July 7, 2007
ELBERT - Neighbors say the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is anything but that.

The realization came after an explosion of shotgun blasts from the camp in May, when Boy Scouts held a two-day clay shooting fundraiser.

"It sounded like Hamas had a training camp next door," said Elbert County Sheriff William Frangis, who fielded numerous calls from people who live near the ranch.

The Scouts say no one complained to them.

Although the camp has had a shooting range for rifles and shotguns for years, noise has not been an issue until now.

Neighbors say part of their frustration is that the Scouts only notified them of the event with the sound of the guns, and they never applied for permit from the county.

"They didn't talk to anyone; they just did it," said 75- year-old John Dunn, a former Elbert County commissioner and 44-year county resident who lives about a quarter mile from the Scout camp.

"The noise was unbelievable," Dunn said, adding that it was enough to scare the elk, deer, and birds in the vicinity. "We haven't seen them since."

The Scouts have planned five more fundraising events from July through August, but they're waiting for a permit from the county commissioners to continue using the clay shooting range. The commissioners will hear their case Wednesday.

But while there's a cease-fire for now, residents fear more events like the one held May 19 and 20 will not only disturb their peace but will bring down the value of their properties.

And Dirk Bird, director of the J BAR CC Ranch Camp, a Jewish summer camp across the road, said he's worried that if fundraising events persist on weekends they will "adversely impact our religious services."

Then there are safety and environmental concerns.

Frangis said in a letter to commissioners that the fundraisers the Scouts planned this year potentially could scatter thousands of pounds of lead from shotgun shells. He also said people have been seen smoking near stockpiles of ammunition at the camp.

Jeff Herman, executive director of the Denver Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, said he met with neighbors Monday and he's trying to reach a compromise. He also learned at the meeting that residents' frustration had been pent up for some time.

"Many of them told me that they had been unhappy for a long time, but to be good neighbors they simply didn't tell us," he said.

Dunn said he can't put up with the shooting because it's become a commercial operation in the form of the Brighton-based Colorado Clays shooting club.

But Herman denied any affiliation with the club, even though the Colorado Clays' Web site in May boasted the grand opening of the Scouts' new shooting range surrounded by "pines, mountain valleys, lakes, and meandering streams."

Richard Miller, director of Elbert County's Planning Commission, said the May event involved the Colorado Clays, and so do future events, which were also posted on the group's Web site in May.

Herman said the Boy Scouts contacted Colorado Clays and asked them to remove the information from their Web site "because it was inaccurate."

Herman said neighbors are asking the Boy Scouts to stop all shooting activity at the range.

He said he's willing to accommodate the times when shooting can take place, but won't agree to stop shooting altogether.

"This certainly cannot be an all-or-nothing proposition," he said.

Then the article/post should have simply said that. Instead, it puts a false quotation into the sheriff's mouth and states he said things and implied things he did not. That's BS, and condoning it just because the sheriff's politics disagree with ours is beneath us.

I agree completely. We have to take the high road if we are to be taken seriously in any argument. As it currently stands, we are often the ones shooting ourselves in the foot.
