Is This Something New? Or Has It Always Been Like This?
I was checking the prices on some ammo on Cabelas site and found something I never noticed before. When I opened up particular links, listed under the "Item Notes" I found the following.
"Due to a change to current production ammunition by the manufacturer, the bullet/case mouth and the primer are not sealed.
"
Does this mean the shelf life is decreased? And why would they do this?
Or has the ammo not been sealed for some time?

What ammo? Most ammo is NOT sealed at the primer or case mouth. It should not affect proper storage. It is to protect against excessive exposure to water (and maybe long-term chambering in weapons where there may be oil or solvent). In my experience only military and some premium defensive ammo is sealed, but my experience is limited to certain types of firearms.

My guess is wolf 7.62x39. I think they stopped sealing it a little while back.
OP it wont hurt anything. Just don't go swimming with your rifle / ammo

Just what Ungawa said. Most ammo isn't sealed unless it's military ammo. Don't store it in the pool and you should be okay.

No biggie. I think wolf stopped sealing them back in the spring or so. Of course people got their panties in a bunch on several gun boards. I'm not sure if wolf ever stated why they changed though - that was one of the things i liked about the wolf - sealed primers and bullets. But, the newer stuff still goes bang.
So, did you pick up your AK yet?
EDIT to say that the primer sealent that they use on their .223 ammo really gums up the bolt face and firing pin. I haven't noticed it as much with the AK's but i don't clean them as well as i do the AR's.Last edited by Guns4Fun; October 25th, 2009 at 11:05 AM.
