    Default s&w

picked a model 581-1 up this morning. aka the distinguished service magnum.
    it's an "L" framed, 4" 357 magnum.
intended as a service weapon, it was the "ultimate" weapon that wasn't. about the time they were introduced the new fad of auto's as service weapons was just blooming, and it never caught on. production only ran 1980-88. this one is from 1986...i <3 the 80's.
it's claim to fame would have been it's medium frame design.
there was nothing new about the K frames nor the the N's.
but the k frames were a bit light for a lifetime of 357's and the n frames though thoroughly suitable for sending the hottest of loads at those that needed stopped, was a tank and ahalf to carry all day everyday.
so the l frame was created.
heavier then the k yet lighter then the n, but designed from the start as a 357. not as a 38 that "could" shoot 357's, but a 357 that could shoot 38's.

That is a bad ass pre lock Smith wheel gun. I do love the .357 revolvers and the old school pin on hammer Smiths are the bees knees. Good find.

the bee's knees are the P&R smiths. but any pre lock is cool in my book.
