My turtle thread.
Well as some of you know, I found 10 baby snappers at SGL 91 a few days back. I have decided to keep them until at least spring before I release them.
I may even keep one or two for awhile longer.
So I hooked them up with a decent habitat and put a filter in cause they freaking stink .
But anyhow, I figure I'll post some pics every few weeks to show my PAFOA fam how their comming along.
If anyone has any input that would help me, feel free to speak up....
So far none of them are even attempting to bite at me, I know that will change at some point, but I've had venomous snakes and a big ass gator as a pet before so I know what I'm getting in to.
I do have a couple questions if anyone knows the answers to, cool...
1. what do the like to eat? dead or alive? (So far I'm keeping worms and some live feeder fish in there.)
2. How fast do they grow?

Re: My turtle thread.
Hmmm... Just a matter of time before one or more figure out how to climb that filter to "freedom."

Re: My turtle thread.
Try your local pet shop
I remember feeding my painters "Turtle sticks" and different types of pellets and flake food. When they start to eat pellets make sure you soak them before feeding them to the turtles, otherwise they can suck up the water in their stomachs and cause problems.

Maybe some feeder gold fish. I would think that you should try to keep the food as close to what they get in nature. They will not be finding any flake food in the wild.
troll Free. It's all in your mind.

Re: My turtle thread.
the earthworms & small fish are a good start... also crickets & mealworms. You could also supplement with powdered vitamins on the insects if they are getting eaten before they would fall in the water which would just wash off the vitamins.
As they get bigger they will soon eat pinkies & then eventually full grown mice. Also put in larger fish as they grow to match their growing appetites.
I'm not sure how fast they grow... I've only taken care of the one we had in Science class in highschool which was too big for the ten gallon aquarium he started the school year in. I think we moved him into a 15 or 20gal & he was outgrowing that by summer.
ETA I know kids catch wild turtles, frogs, fish etc & keep them as pets all the time, & we had that one in my science class, but...
You may want to check the legality of keeping them... I used to work with a wildlife rehabber & I needed to be named on her permit to have ANY wildlife (or part thereof) in my care/possession. It may not be an issue or it may be as simple as makng sure you have a valid fishing license the entire time they are in your care. I'm not sure but I suggest you look into it since you've made it public that they are in your care.Last edited by 87th PVI; October 16th, 2009 at 10:14 AM.
