FORT COLLINS. Colo. - Authorities were scouring the skies Thursday for a 6-year-old boy who reportedly unhooked his family's experimental balloon-powered aircraft and floated away from home, sheriff's officials said.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Department said the boy's family had been building an experimental aircraft that had a large helium balloon attached to it at their home, KUSA-TV reported. The aircraft was approximately 20 feet by 5 feet and covered in tin foil, the station said.
On Thursday morning, according to the family and officials, the boy got onto the aircraft and detached the rope holding it in place. Sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella said the boy climbed into the access door and the airborne device took off.

Was just reported....this thing was not meant to fly and the base is not built to withstand a landing.....



ETA: I sure hope the kid's not in there...and is home hiding because he's afraid Dad is gonna be mad cuz he let the balloon go....

I was just thinking the same thing, It doesn't look like there is any real "entrance" to the basket. Guy probably built it to let it go to fake ufo sightings lol

There's new video up at the link. The balloon landed a bit NE of Denver, and there was no child inside. They reported that police also searched the home, in case the father was mistaken, and didn't find him there either.

I was watching the video feed on foxnews.com....and there were several times where it looked like the "hatch" was open in flight...and the bucket was leaned toward that side most of the flight.....
