    Default Computer Pros Part 2

I thought I had this solved,

    http://forum.pafoa.org/lounge-108/74...uter-pros.html

    But..........

    No sound again.

I get the windows start up sound but everything else is gone.

The device manager says that all devices are working properly.

I uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers but still no sound.

    HELP!

is it a PCI sound card? If so try turning off the computer and moving the card to another PCI slot. Could be an IRQ conflict.

I'm not an expert but I think that I have only one PCI slot open and that is where I installed this sound card.

Why would it work for a day and then give my grief. If it a IRQ conflict, would it have worked before?

I have had it happen before. You might try switching the sound card with another device on another slot. You could try changing the PCI latency as well.

I'll open her back up tomorrow and see if anything looks like I can switch it around.

Make sure ACPI is enabled in your BIOS.

Part of the PCI specification is that IRQs can be shared, but ACPI must be enabled for Windows to handle this properly (because Windows is stupid and doesn't directly support PCI IRQ sharing without using the motherboard's ACPI interface)

Windows is really stupid in this respect. If ACPI is enabled when Windows is installed, you are stuck with using ACPI to manage resources. If you later go in and disable ACPI (meaning you want to use the standard Hardware Abstraction Layer), Windows won't know how to handle it. Disabling the ACPI interface will allow you to manually assign resources in the BIOS, but again, Windows will have no idea what to do if you attempt this if it was installed with ACPI enabled.

So, a couple of things may have occurred. It's possible you corrupted the Windows ACPI driver, or maybe you disabled ACPI in the BIOS to try to assign a manual IRQ to the card?

If you go into Device Manager, then Hardware, then expand the "System Devices" list, you should see "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System." Make sure this is "working properly" and if not, try to do an update driver. I do not know what would happen if you removed this driver and tried to reinstall it.

    tr this first....turn off pc.remove power plug/open case/remove installed pci(tan slot}sound card......power up...shut down remove power again.
install pci sound in a different pci slot, usually one up or one down from where it was installed.reboot and watch to insure it installs in the os.

Not sure if this would help, but it's worth the try. Follow steps on troubleshooting link:

Download sound drivers from this site:

Have you checked Sound and Audio Device properties in your Control Panel?

If you click the Advanced tab you might discover whether the volume of one or more of the sound modules is working properly or not. Might explain why you're hearing the wave tone on startup but nothing afterward.

If that's not the case, do you think you'd be able to check your Device Manager (System properties at the Control Panel) and tell us if any of the devices listed have yellow question marks next to them?

FYI - Assuming this Gateway is an Intel product, there might be one or two chipset drivers you need to install - ones you might not have. UAA might be the culprit, but again, depends on what you have.

How old was this computer again?

The computer will be 3 years old in January.

So far I have check BIOS and the old sound was disabled.

The device manager says that everything is working properly.

I have switched the sound card with the telephone card, one at a time. Rebooting after each step.

I have removed the sound card, rebooted, shut sown, reinstalled sound card.

I have tried to have windows find it, I have tried to install from CD. I have tried to install using Add New Hardware.

I have updated Windows. Message said that the driver was not Windows verified.

I have downloaded updated drivers from the maufactuers website.
It told me to plug in card so I unplugged card ran the updated driver again and plugged in card when directed.

Kepp getting error message about problem with installion. Device may not work properly.

I now get and application error message when I reboot.

Now, no sound, not even Windows start up. I had a critical beep for a while but that's gone too.

I even tried playing a song and moving the speaker jack across the different ports in the sound card just to make sure that I had it plugged in the spot.

I have been working on this since 6AM. I'm fried.

Will probably get a new tower and call it quits. Will they transfer all my data to a new machine?
