Most folks aren't even aware of the facts you pointed to. They're certainly not taught in any school I've attended - and I've attended quite a few. The fact is that slavery has existed since humans first walked the Earth and it still exists today. It doesn't make it right no matter who's doing the enslaving.

However, on matters of the past, they should remain in the past. Holding current generations responsible for the actions of their ancestors is counterproductive for the progression of humanity. It's best to learn from our mistakes and move on.

In this country, some folks - white and black alike - seem to have trouble with this concept and would rather make themselves victims. Yeah, how's that working out for them?

Slavery is actually still in existence in some parts of the world. In fact in Mali it was only outlawed in the last few years. Does this soften the injustices of slavery in the Americas? Of course not, but it does point out that more often than not people arguing about slavery are ignorant to its actual history.

I would argue that we still practice forms of slavery here in the us in the guise of economic help.

There isn't a civilization alive that can say they didn't have some form of slavery. The reason it is such a big deal in USA is because of the number that we had, although I'd be interested to hear how they came up with 12 million slaves... thats a LOT of people

considering the estimated population at the time of the civil war was 23 million (give or take) would indicate that in the south there would be 1 slave for every 1 person... thats a lot.

    a helluva lot
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

Only 4 million slaves at time Civil War started . 8% of southern families owned slaves . Less than 1 % of confederate soldiers owned slave .

There were still slaves in Pennsylvania as late as 1840 according to U.S. census .

If I remember correctly that was one of the reasons the south was so opposed to the freeing of the slaves; at that point the slaves outnumbered the slavers.
