Default ALERT: Scranton lost or stolen ordinance ~ City Hall 9/29. Please attend to oppose!

Just received this E-mail yesterday from NRA-ILA
    Scranton City Council Proposes
    Attack on Pennsylvania’s Preemption Statutes
Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard!

On Tuesday, the Scranton City Council introduced a proposal that would require gun-owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within a 48-hour period or face fines and possible imprisonment.

This law would not only violate Pennsylvania’s state preemption laws, but would also turn law-abiding gun-owners who have already been victimized by theft into criminals.

Please contact the members of the Scranton City Council TODAY at (570) 348-4113 and respectfully urge them to oppose this unwarranted, unjust and illegal ordinance. Email addresses can be found below. City Council members can also be reached via fax at (570) 348-4207.

I just sent all of the council members an E-mail opposing this illegal measure.

Obviously, I wasn't the only one to get that email. Didn't Pittsburgh successfully pass an ordinance just like this? Even if it is illegal, that won't stop Dougherty and his cronies from passing it (just like the Scranton smoking ban). It shouldn't stop everyone from sending emails and making calls, but the current administration doesn't generally care about its citizens wants if it isn't an election year.

I hate to say it but they will continue to pass this bogus law until someone sues them.

...Or until a small bunch of people attend the town council meetings and voice their opposition to it.

I'm not sure gun owners *won* in York, but the ordinance did not get passed. The town council passed a meaningless resolution instead.

Save the lawsuit for after you've lost. In the meantime, fight it!

While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

What day/time? Where are the council meetings held in Scranton? Depending on when/where I should be able to get at least two other armed protesters with me.

    AGENDA:
    http://www.scrantonpa.gov/council_ag...0Agenda%20.pdf

    6. CONSIDERATION OF ORDINANCES – READING BY TITLE –
    A.
READING BY TITLE – FILE OF COUNCIL NO. 87, 2009 – AN ORDINANCE - TO AMEND CHAPTER 232 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF SCRANTON TO REPEAL ARTICLE I OF CHAPTER 232 TITLED “FIREARMS” AND REPLACE WITH A NEW ARTICLE I TITLED “FIREARMS”, TO PROVIDE FOR DEFINITIONS, DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS AND FAILURE TO REPORT LOST OR STOLEN FIREARMS, AND RENUMBERING THE REMAINING SECTIONS OF CHAPTER 232 IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER.
I will be calling Monday to inquire/confirm about public comment parameters.

    Please make plans to attend.
Please encourage your family, neighbors and co-workers to attend. We need to pack the house and get the message across that
    1) Proposed ordinance is unlawful
    2) Proposed ordinance is worthless as a tool to fight illegal/straw purchases.
    3) That the people will not tolerate such misleading and unlawful action.

    Pre-Meeting gathering location:
For those that will arrive early let's meet up here before heading to the meeting:
    Northern Light
    536 Spruce St.
    Scranton, PA 18503
    570-342-3200

From City Hall the coffee shop is south on Washington and left on Spruce. You can almost see it from city hall.

    MAP

    PARKING:
There is a public parking garage almost directly across from City Hall (couple buildings south)
There is a garage on Spruce, behind the Fed courthouse
I believe there is a garage on Adams too.
Also, city street parking is metered but the meter enforcement ends at 6PM. So if you arrive before 6 you can just feed the meter when you park and you will be fine.

Post Meeting I plan on going here for food/socializing:
    Buona Pizza
    504 Lackawanna Ave
    Scranton, PA 18503-2008
    (570) 342-4032‎

    MAP

Let's be careful with our words. "Armed protesters" is a title the newspaper will use in an attempt to paint you as something other than what you are, so people will be inclined to discredit you.

You are not a "protester", you are a local citizen attending a public meeting for the same reason anyone else attends. If you carry a firearm regularly that fact is irrelevant to your purpose there.

Our purpose is simply to educate the ignorant. Legally armed or not.

It's common practice to shut down the public comment time at Scranton council meetings when you say something they don't like. There's a coffee shop right on the square for a pre meeting. It's called Northern Lights on Spruce st. I've never been in there but it's only a block away.

I am going to inquire/confirm what the procedures and parameters are for speaking at the meeting (public comment).

If you would like to speak at the meeting and need ideas I suggest reading through the York City and Pittsburgh threads:
