1911 for first pistol?
I'll be 21 soon, and can't decide what pistol to buy first. I have a healthy amount of firearms experience (Army 45B) so I don't think a 1911 would be too complicated to learn with. Suggestions? Thanks in advance

Re: 1911 for first pistol?
If you like 1911's, and are comfortable with buying/shooting .45ACP as you learn more about shooting...go for it.
I'd stick with a 5" steel framed 1911 though.
Name a budget, and what features you want, then we can give more specific recommendations.
As you can see...there are MANY to choose from:

You should have any problem with the 1911 style pistol being your first pistol. My first pistol was a 1911 Colt and I had problems with it

Re: 1911 for first pistol?
Once I was your age and I had the same question. I got myself a just out Colt goverment model MkIV series 70 in 45ACP. Being young and the first handgun I had I shot the living daylights out of it, wore off most of the bluing, even got some rust on it. Since then it has ben reblued, twice, and still shot the snto out of it. I still have it today, and probley will die with it. It still goes bang every time. YES-YES-YES a good 1911 will good to you even if you are not so good to it.

I would recommend going to a gun store or dare I say Cabellas and shop. Put your hands on anything that interests you. Determine what you feel the most comfortable with and make a list of all the pistols you like at that point. Then go somewhere that rents the guns you like or something close and rent/shoot them and then decide which one is right for you. Only you will know which pistol is the right one for you.
If you narrow your search down to a few specific models, you might even link up with some members on this forum to let you try. I have met up with quite a few members to let them try my toys and I tried theirs. I don't get to your area very often, but I am certain there are members near you.
I would never talk someone out of buying a 1911, I have one and love it, will never get rid of it, but some people don't like them. I wouldn't buy a car without driving it so I wouldn't by a gun with out shooting it or one just like it.When you are called a racist, it just means you won an argument with an Obama supporter.

Re: 1911 for first pistol?
I had large caliber wheel guns for bush carry in AK. When I moved to NY they had to go.
When I moved to PA I bought an old Colt Combat Commander, then a Taurus PT1911, then a Kimber Rimfire Target, then a Kimber Pro Carry II...see where this is going?
1911's are addictive. They can be troublesome, but once you get them running right they're a real pleasure to shoot. Buy one!My Best, Walt

While I'm sure you will have no trouble with the 1911, I would recommend a smaller caliber simply for cost and availability. Cheaper ammo means you will be able to shoot more.
If you have a disposable income, by all means, go with the 1911.

Re: 1911 for first pistol?
Go for it. As a 45b i assume you have some skills to work on a 1911. some need more attention than your average pistol. As mentioned a few times above, I think the problem is going to be the addiction issue.
Do you have a budget set yet? prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Buying a "base" or GI model from Springfield or Colt is a good starting point to build from. You can shoot it and then customise it to your liking as time and budget permit.
