Default Need A Good .22LR Target Pistol...

I'm lookin' to buy my first .22LR pistol for target shooting.

    I have 2 pistols in mind: 1) Walther P22, 2) Sig Mosquito.

Which would you recommend? And, why?

    Thanks in advance!

I hate when people do this to me but I'm going to do it anyway. I'm going to recommend guns that you're not interested in. I've heard a lot of bad things about the sig. Not much about the walther never seen one. But if you want a quality reliable accurate .22 get a ruger or a browning buckmark. Both are top notch. I personally liked the browning better based on the grip. I got at least 4-5k rds through mine and it's better than new.

I'm on a price budget which sucks. But, I've shot a Ruger Mark III Hunter and loved it! Just don't have the extra $150 for it right now.

I think I would look for a used one and see if you could save a few $. I only paid $325 for my browning. I just looked up the sig and the walther and they are around the same price.

    P-22.... a target pistol??

Ruger MKIII or a Browning Buckmark would be my two recommendations.

EDIT:: Save your money and buy the Ruger... You won't be disappointed in the long run. I own a Ruger MKIII 22/45 and I've shot my friend's Walther P22 many times. My Ruger will easily shoot groups half the size of the Walther. He even has the longer barrel on his Walther.

Wolf's in Lebanon is selling a Mark III for $325 new

I have a Walther P22 and other it being a toy, I can not recommend it for anything else. Hell the front sights pop off unless you glue them in place.

I should've included this in my original posting.

I'm teaching my sisters and a female friend of mine how to shoot. They've never shot a gun or even held a gun. So, I wanna start them out with something small and light with very little recoil. Don't wanna have them start off with a 9mm or a .40S&W.

The budget is something to be dealt with for sure. But.....don't let that lead you into buying an inferior gun - neither of the guns that you mentioned is a "good" target pistol. You'd be wasting the money that you do have.
A quick story - a young fellow that I shoot in a Winter league with, started off with the Walther. He was not shooting well. One evening, I lent him my High Standard Victor and told him to shoot the match with it. First time handling the gun, his score went up over 100 points. The H-S is a good target gun; the Walther isn't.
H-Ss are no longer made and are hard to find used. The Ruger and Buckmark are both good suggestions. Wait if you have to or by used. I'd go for the Ruger Mk.II; it was my first .22 and remains my back up gun.

Get the Ruger. My son loves to shoot it. He's ten.

EDIT:: I have shot one Sig Mosquito in the past. It would not cycle properly when using anything but high velocity ammo. It would shoot the bulk packs or standard velocity target ammo. It would only work with Velocitors or other higher power ammo. That will increase shooting costs.

I bought my son a Browning Buckmark on his 12th birthday 28 yrs ago (Geeesh, that was a long time ago!) & it's still going strong. The Ruger is also a top notch .22 for target.
