Pittsburgh law against public urination moves forward

Pittsburgh's city code has no provision against using streets, sidewalks, parks, parking lots, stairwells and doorways as impromptu bathrooms, so city council today tentatively approved a proposed ordinance that would fill that gap.

Councilman Bruce Kraus said police have had to rely on state laws to cite those who urinate outdoors, typically in neighborhoods like the South Side where he lives. In some cases, a state charge of lewdness could land the defendant on lists of registered sex offenders, he said.

The new city code plank would bar urination or defecation in any public place, or on private property without the owner's consent, except in sanitary facilities. The penalty for each violation would be $500.

A final vote could happen Tuesday.

I don't understand this. What is the point of creating a city law if public urination is already prohibited by the state?

I take it to mean that they want to be able to give a lesser charge for this act.... But we all know what will happen, the prosecutor will file state and local charges. Just a way for the city to make money off of G20 if you ask me.

I'm all for it! This is a common problem especially on the South Side of Pittsburgh. Drunken idiots jumping from bar to bar and relieving themselves where ever they feel like in between stops. They act like they are in Philly! j/k
