Georgetown Patrolman Chad Spicer, 29, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on September 1.

Two suspects are in custody and a manhunt is underway for a third after a shooting that took the life of a Delaware police officer and left another wounded Tuesday night.

Georgetown Patrolman Chad Splicer was fatally wounded while responding to reports of a robbery at a fast-food restaurant on Route 113 just before 7 p.m.

Delaware State Police said a caller reported shots fired in the parking lot of a McDonalds. Witnesses said three suspects fled the scene in a silver Chrysler Sebring.

When Patrolman Spicer and his partner, Corporal Shawn Brittingham, stopped a vehicle matching the witness description, the occupants inside fled on foot.

Police said a suspect, identified as 22-year-old Derrick Powell, opened fire, striking Spicer before he even exited the patrol car. The 29-year-old officer later died from his injuries.

Cpl. Brittingham, 31, was struck by a bullet fragment in the neck and was rushed to Beebe Medical Center. He was treated and reportedly released on Wednesday.

Authorities apprehended Powell in a nearby home following the shooting. Powell has been charged with 1st degree murder and related offenses.

A second suspect was also taken into custody, but has not yet been criminally charged.

Police remain on the hunt for 20-year-old Christopher Reeves. He was apparently driving the Sebring at the time of the incident.

If you have any information as to Reeves' whereabouts, please contact Delaware State Police or call 911.

Patrolman Chad Spicer had been a member of the Georgetown Police Department since September 2, 2008. He is survived by his parents and his three-year-old daughter Aubrey.

Officer Spicer's fatality is the first line of duty of death in the history of the Georgetown Police Department.
