Too hot in my car?
I carry my Glock 17 into work rarely ever, and most days I leave it in my car. That's pretty much my only option. I don't feel like asking the boss to put it in the safe or what not. So my gloriously hot car it is.
So the point; I was wondering if leaving my gun in the car to bake gets it to hot enough temperatures that a round wants to cook off. I mean, obviously it hasn't yet, but can it? Also, I don't keep one in the pipe, but I'm going to start doing that. Would that have any effect of the chance of a round cooking? Some say that his discharge is luminous.

Re: Too hot in my car?
Don't have any technical data but I carried my side arm in the sandbox and I remember getting a report from the airforce weather station that it was 124, didn't ever go off. Sometimes in the cockpit of the aircraft it would get at least that hot (black cockpit interior), never shot myself.
My impression is that heat by itself is not a major issue.

Re: Too hot in my car?
I have my glock in my car all the time and nothing has ever happened. I don't think the inside of a car can get hot enough to bake a round off.
The Mythbusters did a show on rounds baking off in an oven. Episode 85 and it took 500 degrees for a round to go off.

Unless your car gets over 470 degrees Fahrenheit then I would say no. Sulfur acts as a fuel but also has the lowest ignition temperature (470F) out of any compound in gunpowder.
I only know this because I am in a similar situation and have to leave my carry piece in the car while at work so I Googled it . Still, it's definitely not pleasant putting a very hot pistol into a IWB holster after baking in the car all day!Manus Haec Inimica Tyrannis

Re: Too hot in my car?
I don't know what car you drive, but this works for me in Subaru Forester. I have an Uncle Mike's soft IWB for my Glock 22 that I tuck in between my center console and the passenger seat. It fits snug enough that it doesn't move around and I can actually grab it quicker than if I had it IWB. This will give it time to cool off before you tuck to carry after work. Just a thought.
