    Default New PA Resident

I'm a new resident to PA (moved in Aug 4th). I've been getting mixed responses, so I'm hoping someone who knows can clear this up. Is there a minimum amount of time required to be a resident of the state before purchasing handguns? I've been told everything from "no, as long as you have a valid PA license" to six months residency... Anyone know for sure, and where to find the info in case I have to show the dealer???

Well, when I moved back, I bought a Rifle 1 week after getting my PADL.

As long as you have a valid PA license...you should be fine. I have never heard of a minimum residency requirement...pretty sure that's incorrect.

When you go to get you PA LTCF - license to carry firearms- I have heard of some sheriffs trying to impose something like that, although it is incorrect in that situation as well.

There is a requirement for resident aliens I believe. Not for citizens.

SSgtLP - are you active duty military? If so, as soon as you made the PCS move you were considered a resident of the state. All you need to purchase a long arm or a handgun is a valid picture ID (drivers license, etc.) and a copy of your orders. You are also considered a resident of the state that is your home of record.

If not active duty military, as soon as you get a PA DL then you will be good to go.

Thanks for the info. I thought it sounded weird when the lady at the counter said a 6 month wait. I'd never heard of any state doing anything like that.

When I moved to PA about a year ago I got my license in about two weeks. I went right to the gunstore and bought a handgun. My id even had big TEMPORARY{?} in red across it. There were no issues whatsoever. By the way welcome to PA and the forum.

No. There is no time delay for getting a LTCF either. But do yourself a favor and get yourself your PA driver's license right away. I would guess things will be pretty complicated without it.
