Default 5.25" too long to keep HV subsonic?

I have a Ruger Charger that I had my gunsmith cut so I could use bulk-pack HV ammo and keep it subsonic. While he otherwise did a great job, he cut it to 5.25" instead of 4.5", like I asked. Am I going to get sonic cracks with this?

How is that a great job? I know you said "otherwise," but still...

    3/4 inch should not matter

Doubtful that it's too long. What do you consider HV ammo? I shoot regular bulk box .22 through a 5.5" and it stays subsonic. Now are you calling stingers and that type ammo HV?

Well, the job looks great - clean, sharp threads and a true shoulder, good rebluing - it looks great other than being longer than I asked.

By high velocity, I mean the bulk-pack stuff, about 1260 fps.

After looking into it more, I'm pretty sure that length difference does matter. From what I've read elsewhere this evening, it seems for most people in situations like this, much past 4.5" and you get cracks from this kind of ammo, although some of it depends on the gun, too.

Thumbs up Re: 5.25" too long to keep HV subsonic?

I have been using Remington Target (standard velocity) in a 8" barrel on a Charger and they stay subsonic. Barrel from Hi-Desert Dog. Supressor is Outback II.

    bwperdue,
im pretty sure you and i were talking the other day on Silencertalk. im Derf

you should be ok with that barrel. just dont buy HV specific ammo. I can tell a difference from the CCI std vel ammo to the Fed 550 bulk Walmart pack. The Fed has more of a crack, not so much a sonic crack , but it deff louder thru my Quest.

was there a reason he cut it at that length instead of the what you asked for?

    what can did you get?

Yeah, you and I were talking over there!

I don't know why...I think maybe he just had a brainfart and measured from the shoulder where the barrel butts up against the receiver instead of going from the chamber mouth. Either that, or he's done this before and knew that 4.5" would likely cause issues. I haven't talked to him since, as I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, and I didn't notice it when I picked it up.

I ordered a SWR Spectre from Frank Iannamico in Greensburg.

I also have a line on a case (5,000) of Winchester DynaPoints for about $250. While not really subsonic, they are slow enough to easily stay subsonic in most less-than-rifle length barrels.

    Very cool

You should be ok, esp with the Dynapoints.

I got to meet Frank a few weeks ago at a shoot in Franklin. Very nice guy, let me shoot a G18 and a M11. I need to pick up a few of his books.
