Would-be robbery victim fights back

State police at Greensburg said a would-be robbery victim fought back late Saturday night when he was attacked outside a bank in Westmoreland County. The incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the night deposit drop at PNC Bank in the Eastgate Plaza in Hempfield.

Greg O'Neil of Indiana, an employee of the Greensburg Eat-N-Park, was exiting his car, intending to make a deposit, when he was attacked by a man who was hiding at the corner of the building. State police said the man sprayed Mr. O'Neil with pepper spray and attempted to grab the the deposit bags. Mr. O'Neil fought back.

State police said he struck the assailant, who then began to run away. Mr. O'Neil gave chase but the unknown man was picked up by someone in a silver or gray vehicle described by police as a "hatchback-type SUV." The vehicle fled the scene.

The would-be robber is described as having dark eyes and dark hair, wearing a tossel cap, shorts, dark socks, and "skater-style shoes." Police said he had a dark bandana covering a portion of his face, police said. He is about 5 feet, 10 inches tall. No money was stolen, police said.
