Default Advice needed re How to buy and use gun

    Hi,

Interested in buying a shotgun for home security, but have no idea how to use one. Like in Schuylkill county, any suggestions on where to learn, also want my child to learn how to use safely. I also have a handgun a relative sold me, but really don't know how to use it. Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks C

Find an NRA class. You can go to their website and look under education. There will probably be some within an hours drive of you. I think there is an instructor in Allentown who does regular classes. If you do not see one listed call NRA training and they will put you intouch with an instructor. The instructor will be able to guide you accordingly.

Please, please, please, don't handle the gun until you have had training. Also, have a trusted friend/coworker/etc. that handles guns regularly inspect the gun to make sure it is serviceable. Or get some recommendations here on the forum for a good gun shop nearby that you can take it to to be inspected. That same gun shop may be able to give you some advice on where to get some certified training. Calling the NRA is not a bad suggestion. Also, if I remember correctly, the NRA has a magazine geared strictly towards women shooters.

    Hello.

Since you seem to be new to the world of guns, forgive me for asking, but this relative that sold you a handgun, was it transferred legally to you thru a gun dealer?

Exceptions are in the case of a transfer between spouses or transfers between a parent and child or transfers between grandparent and grandchild.

    BTW, welcome to the forum!

The NRA program is called Women on Target. It's a good program but not all instructors are certified yet. An NRA Pistol and an NRA Shotgun instructor can satisfy your training needs. And like it was mentioned by xringshooter do not play around with the guns until inspected by a professional (thnks xring for the reminder). These classes are very comprehensive and cover a lot of information and includes live fire. A basic course for shotgun alone is 10 hours.

The NRA course is a good suggestion, you may also check your local ranges because they usually hold them also.

I too was wondering about buying the handgun from the relative. If it wasn't your mom or dad, grandmother or grandfather PLEASE get hold of them and go do the transfer through a shop LEGALLY .... don't put yourself in the position (especially as a mother) of inadvertantly breaking the law. Remember, not knowing the law is not a good excuse.

How old is your child? Also, where in Schuylkill County... its a fairly large county.
You may also want to check into the First Shots program http://www.wheretoshoot.org/Find_Range/index.asp
    its a good start.
What type of pistol is it?
"The rifle is the weapon of democracy. If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military. The hired servants of our rulers. Only the government-and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws." (Edward Abbey, "The Right to Arms," Abbey's Road [New York, 1979])
I have my rifle. Do you?

+1000 ... great advice and concerns. Also, there are sections that are specific to counties. Go to the one for your area and ask if anyone is will to help you out. I'm sure there will be members here that have experience that would be more than happy to meet you somewhere (maybe their range) and go over operation of your firearm(s)

    Welcome To The Forum!!!

Calling the NRA for classes is a great idea.
Calling local gun ranges is another great idea. My range offers free lessons to anyone.
If a gun range is worth their salt, they will be more than happy to help you get the basics of firearm handeling free of charge.
Read up on here. Lots of info!
Keep an eye out for gatherings in your area. Meeting and talking with like minded folk is allways a good time.

Thanks for all the great advice. The gun was transferred legally through a local dealer, so that was done the right way. Will check into the safety courses.

    Thank you all
