    Default ENRADD Citation

While driving through a small Borough in Venango County the speed limit changed from 55mph to 35mph. Before I had a chance to slow down I passed through an enradd speed trap and was cited for doing 50 in a 35mph zone. Is it worth paying the extra $7 and pleading not guilty in front of a magistrate or am I screwed and just pay the $150+ ? Has anyone beat an enradd ticket I know it just started being used in PA and all the local Police Depts. are starting to use them. It's a money maker!

Please tell us why it's a "money maker".

Are you saying you weren't speeding?

Why didn't you have time to slow down?

Was the ENRADD set up at least 500' from the speed change?

ENRADD is nothing new to PA. It's been used for quite a few years, although it may be "new" to this particular department.

There should have been a sign saying "speed limit ahead" and then you have five hundred feet to slow down.

If no sign is there, or if it is blocked by trees, I'd fight it.

IF all else fails, plead NOT guilty, and talk to the officer before you go to court, and ask to plead it down before you go in.

I usually allow the driver to plead to a lesser speed when he takes a hearing. Not a guarantee, but probably worth the $7.00 unless it will cost you a day of work too.

depends on where you live... and how much the town wants revenue

Towns like Derry Township (hershey) screw everyone over equally, other towns are more lax l guess you'd say

I just called it a "money maker" because it's a simplified method to check the speed of vehicles, and the community gets its share of the fine. I had just passed the intersection of I-80 and was almost run off the road by 2 18 wheelers either exiting or entering I-80. I had to change lanes to prevent jamming the brakes. The highway changed to 2 lanes and I let off the gas when I noticed a 35mph speed limit. I realized I wasn't slowing down fast enough and as I started to apply the brakes I saw the police car in the mirror and began to pull over. I never saw the sensors or the police car and I never saw the sign 35mph ahead. This was the first time I was in that area, I was probably doing more then 35, but I think I had extenuating circumstances. Not a good defense but I don't think I was going as fast as stated on the citation. I'm betting the 35mph area isn't even 1 mile long. It's a small Boro. If the Police Officer doesn't show up for the hearing, do they still throw the case out? I'm sure he'll be there.

ENRADD may have been around since the late 90s. But they just got authorization to start using it around here. It used to be expensive and small communitities wouldn't pay for it. Maybe the price came down. Basically the police officer doesn't have to calculate the speed with a stop watch. It's done with transmitters, light sensors and a computer. It's accurate with the light beams set 3 feet apart. Too late to slow down even if you see the lines.
