Default Need a PA driver's license to purchase?

I am a recent graduate and have lived in PA for 3 years and own a house here but I never received a PA driver's license. I will soon be selling my car and moving to D.C. but wanted to buy a target pistol to keep in my house here.

A dealer in Pittsburgh told me that I could not purchase a pistol without a PA driver's license. Does anyone know if this is true?

    thanks,

    T

I believe that is true. You need some form of state issued id.

Correct as stated above, it doesn't need to be a DL, you can use a PA state ID card.

Wasn't this asked earlier...with someone discovering that you couldn't have both a state ID and a Driver's License simultaneously....? That is, you have to surrender your out-of-state license to get the PA state ID (meaning you might as well just get the PA driver's license.)

    My memory is fuzzy.

sorry if the question was already asked, I searched for a similar thread before posting the new one and didn't see anything.

To get a new DL you have to surrender the out of state DL, but I don't know about the ID card. The major difference for me is that I think I would have to retake the driver's test for a DL (because I didn't transfer it within 60 days). Not that I'm worried about the test, its just the time involved. My out of state DL is good until 2009.

Either way, thanks for all the help and sorry this has lost any relation to firearms.

Nope. I had an out-of-stae license for 4 years, then decided to buy a gun (which meant I needed a PA license).

Just go to the DMV, pay your $38, wait around for the bureocracy to catch up with you, and walk out with your brand new shiney DL.

You don't have to surrender your DL to get an ID card.

I had a MI. DL when I got my state ID card and did not have to turn over my DL.

That is only if your going from an out of state DL to a PA DL.

    Final Answer (sort of)
Just in case others have this problem:

The Driver License Center will not allow someone to have a PA photo ID card if they have a current out of state driver license (despite the fact that the PA photo ID form says to bring such a license if you have one).

This may be new, the helpful civil servant I spoke with suggested that it might be part of the new security regulations that went in place about a month ago.

The good news is that the they don't enforce the 60 days from time arrival for transferring a driver's license, so you can be here for years and just switch it over.

Of course, this may be dependent upon the Center you go to and the the clerk you get.

    Thanks for all the help

Must be new, I only did mine 3 years ago....not that long.

Sorry for the bum scoop, I'm glad that you called them before you went down there.
