Shout out to tree stand hunters
My wife works in an ER. They call fall "tree stand" season! Wear your safety harnesses! You don't want to visit the ER.

Re: Shout out to tree stand hunters
My harness caught me last year while climbing down. Don't forget to wear it up and down the tree and stay safe this year!

Re: Shout out to tree stand hunters
Remember that with a harness, you need a plan to get down or out of the harness within 15 min or so or suffer suspension trauma http://www.osha.gov/dts/shib/shib032404.html

Re: Shout out to tree stand hunters
And ALWAYS use nothing less than a full-body harness. It will support you by your thighs, leaving you the use of your hands and arms, and more importantly, retains your ability to breathe.
Also remember that you will not be able to reach anything in your pants pockets.
I always have a knife clipped to the chest strap, along with communications... radio, cellphone. My survival pack is always kept on my person, and not in any fanny or backpack which might be left hanging on the tree or stand and therefore out of reach in case of a fall or emergency.

Re: Shout out to tree stand hunters
I have never used a treestand, climber or hang-on, without a safety harness. My wife got me a HSS vest a few years ago and other being heavy, I love it. I used to try to talk myself out of wearing the harness because some of those are like wretsling an octopus. But not anymore, I just put the vest on and snap the seat belt type buckles, and I am off in seconds.

Re: Shout out to tree stand hunters
I fell 4 years ago while wearing a seat-o-the-pants harness. It saved me. My climber slipped on the tree as I was going up. Don't ever think that you can hold on to the top section of a climber if the bottom breaks free!!! It happened so fast I didn't know what hit me until I was hanging from the harness with the climber still attached to one foot. I was able to get the bottom back on the tree and get my other foot back in, to climb back down. I hunted the rest of the day from the ground....
I have since upgraded to a HSS vest and like it much better than any other I have tried.
