If you are not doing force on force....
you are playing with yourself. It feels good but will not prepare you for the real thing.
Not to knock traditional martial arts but they do not prepare you for the reality of a real life conflict. Don't feel bad though, much of traditional firearms and edged weapons training is just as contrary.
Think of a violent assault as a test, when you study for a test you do so by collecting the pertinent information instead of just reading everything you can get your hands on. If someone that had no proof of knowledge in the subject tried to get you to pay them to train you would you accept? Of course not. Then why do it with combatives, guns and knives.
The rub with guns- 99% of people who folks would say are "great with a gun" have never been in a shooting or done any force on force and are awesome at shooting cardboard on the sound of a buzzer.
The rub with knives- a 5 yr old can cut you with a knife without any training. Most people who are "good with knives" are thought of in that way because they can cut you fast, not because of being able to defend against them. And too many of those that do rely on being able to see the knife to begin defending. This flies in the face of everything we know about real edged weapon assaults.
The rub with open hand combatives- the bottom line is don't worry about defending against a bunch of ninjas on meth if you cannot defend against a roundhouse punch.

when you dont know if someone is a deadly threat or not.
scanning hands and waistbands
giving audable clear commands
looking for cover
understanding where your loved ones are in relation to whats happening. Does your child know not to run between you and a threat as you draw? Is your wife grabbing you? yelling in your ear?
You cant get hits without good marksmanship. Shooting and hitting targets accurately cannot be minimized.
But self defense and understanding what happens, and how prepared you are for a sudden unexpected violent attack is a much larger subject then that.
and also I think that generally people dont understand how dramatically marksmanship can decline once new and stressful elements are introduced.

Re: If you are not doing force on force....
the kind you see in movies...where a guy rears back and "cocks" the punch and the delivers it in a rather "round" tragectory. you can see it coming a mile away and it is very easily blocked/avoided in real life. many real world "bar fights" where the combatants got their "training" from watching TV do actually feature these.
people who actually know how to punch on the other hand deliver their punch in a straight line without "cocking it" first. much quicker and harder to block/avoid. also, if done properly, hits much harder. if you are not prepared, you might just wake up staring at the ceiling thinking "WTF just happened?"F*S=k

That is why it is so vital, to continually raise the bar and goals of your accuracy standards.
If you shoot 2" groups at 7-10 yds, you will more than double that under duress. When you are talking about 4-6 inches, that IS the difference between a hit or a miss.
