It's easy. Declare to the airline your taking a firearm with you. TSA will require this as well. You must have the gun in a double locked hard-sided gun case. This is a case with locks or holes for locks at both ends and can be plastic. TSA perfers what is known as a TSA lock, they are available at Wal-Mart or gunshops. TSA has a master to these locks so they can open and inspect if they want. After the case and/or gun is inspected TSA will have you place a bright orange paper with the gun which is proof it has already been properly reported and inspected. NO ammo with the gun. I had absolutely no trouble with TSA and once at the end of my trip picking up my luggage was like any other trip.

But for definative information Google TSA. Their website will give you the latest regulations and procedures. Your getting ready to do something that if done wrong you could get in big trouble so trust nothing I, a stranger, have said. Check for from the source accurate info.

Most definitely do NOT use a TSA lock on your gun case. TSA and airline procedures specify that you and you alone should possess the key or combination to your gun case lock. Here's Continental's guidance (scroll down to Firearms): http://www.continental.com/web/en-US...ge/sports.aspx

While Continental describes a hard-sided container, this does not mean you have to have Zero Haliburton luggage. I use the ubiquitous soft fabric upright roller luggage with extendable handle. But inside, my handgun is in a COM steel case http://www.center-of-mass.com/ like the one in the top left photo on this site, cabled to the luggage frame. On the outside of the suitcase, however, I use a TSA lock. That way the TSA inspector can open the suitcase, see the orange tag that I filled out at the airline counter and tied or taped to the COM (don't let them tell you to put it inside the COM case - it's there to show TSA that you've declared an unloaded firearm).

Exact procedures vary by airport, but they'll usually have an airline employee or skycap escort you someplace to turn the bag over to TSA for screening. They may ask you for the COM key at that point. Or not. I've experienced both, as recently as the past two weeks.

I haven't traveled with a rifle/shotgun case, where the gun case IS the luggage. In that case, there will probably be multiple locking points and the orange tag DOES go inside the case (I heard a skycap explain this to a NWA agent in Seattle last week).

They will probably ask you to show them that the gun is unloaded. Make sure you do this beforehand so you don't feel foolish after assuring them multiple times that it is, indeed, unloaded.

They usually do, but in Seattle last week neither the Continental rep nor TSA inspector in Seattle asked me to open the COM case. The week before that, a Northwest rep DID ask me to show her. One odd thing - she was from Tokyo, where exposure to handguns would be mighty rare. I wonder if the airline provides them training on what to look for?

    THAT could ruin your day!
