How in depth do you want to get? Some of my favorites are:
Founding Brothers
and
1776
Plus there are numerous biographies that are outstanding.Bill USAF 1976 - 1986, NRA Endowment, USCCA

Although its focus is not exclusively on early America (he does spend several chapters on this subject, IIRC,) I recommend supplementing your main text with James Loewen, Lies My Teacher Told Me.

+1 on 1776. Great book. Also check out the John Adams Bio. Both will give you a feel of the time.
