Father passed away...what do I do with his firearms?
My father passed away today and one of the responding officers suggested that I “register” his firearms in my name or my brother’s name. I told him that the long guns do not get registered in PA and he agreed but said that his two pistols may or may not need to be “registered” and that I should call the station to determine if any action is necessary. It was my understanding that because they belonged to my father that they would be passed down without paperwork. I rather not fill out any paper work if I can avoid it because I do not want these to be on some internal register that can be used in the event of a ban, restriction etc…and I do not want them to make up some story about how I need to turn them in and yadi yadi yadda. I know the Phila police are having a tough time with handguns on the street and would just assume take them and destroy them but I want to avoid losing them. What are your thoughts?

Yes, he left them to my brother and I. He had already given them to us while he was alive but we never filled out any paperwork or anything.

Re: Father passed away...what do I do with his firearms?
If he is your legal father they are yours. DO NOT call anyone and tell the police officer, if he talks to you again, that I called him a complete idiot and that he should find another job if he doesn't understand or know the law he is supposed to enforce. Philly had/has? and illegal law about certain firearms. If you call they might pull something stupid on you and cause you all sorts of trouble. They are yours legally Someone will post the specific law here. You don't have to "register", which we don't have in PA, any firearms ever in PA you just have to transfer them via an FFL except if from a parent/grandparent to a child and i believe visa versa. He's a moron and if he's your friend get better friends.

You are good to go. I just got a lot of firearms in the same manner. You have my sympathies.
Be safe (and DO NOT "register" them).

First of all, let me give you my deepest condolences on your father's passing.
Now dear, I'm going to tell you what I know...I'm sure my husband or one of the more "knowledgable" guys will give you the laws. There is no register, lets start w/ that. Second of all, your father can give you the firearm w/o the paperwork and since he did that before his death...there is not an issue.
Now, maybe the other guys can give you the law basis.
