Default Reloadng 270 Brass for 30-06

I've tried looking around on google and could only find that you can reload 30-06 for 270 but nothing the other way around.

Looking at the dimensions in my Sierra book they are almost the same.

I trim my 06 reloads down to 2.478 which is shorter than 270. I took a piece of 270 brass, ran it though my 06 RCBS FL resizer die, trimmed it down to 2.478 and seated a bullet. The COAL of the 270 brass and the 06 are the same and I chambered it in my 30-06 and it chambered fine/bolt closed smooth.

Would it be safe to for me to reload 270 brass for 06?

Making the neck bigger will make it thinner, also after resizing it it'll be hardened (regardless of which way you went bigger or smaller, unless you annealed it). So its more likely to split.

I can't say if its safe or not, personally I like having head stamps that match the cartridge. If it were for and old hard to find cartridge with a lower pressure I'd say sure... Personally I'd just get 30-06 brass, if you have a lot of 270 trade someone.

The case neck of the .270 is 0.050" longer. Trim to the correct length after expanding. The .270 Win is based on the .30-06 case, so expanding to .308 is safe, as is firing them. Nonte's book of cartridge conversions references .270 cases for forming .30-06s, as do both Howell and Donnelly. Anneal the shoulder and neck before forming.

I have turned 30-06 into 270 just by running the 30-06 brass into a 270 die without annealing. The neck is shorter than standard 270 but when they are loaded to the same OAL I've seen no real diffrence even through a chronograph.

I wouldn't try it the other way (270 to 30-06) for all the reasons alreasdy stated. Besides 30-06 brass is much easier to find than 270.

Trade them to kevinm and you'll both be happy.
