Dessicant?
Do people store their ammunition with desiccant packets? If so, does anyone have a good online source?
I'm a novice to firearms, so how often is it generally recommended to turn over one's ammo supply? I'll hit the range once a month shooting FMJ, but how often should I cycle through my carry ammo to keep it fresh?

Re: Dessicant?
You needn't worry about your ammo.
I'm still shooting .303Brit from WWI that was wrapped in paper and stored in bandoleers. Also pre-WWII to Korean War era 30-06 ball that was stored in 30cal ammo cans. Hell, we occasionally shoot some 120yo 32 Long rimfire from time to time.
Unless your ammo has been submerged for weeks, months, and years in water - dont fret over it.

Re: Dessicant?
There is no requirement to store ammo with desiccant. I do, since it can get a little humid in one of the places that I keep my stock.
Ebay is your friend. I picked up 100 5g packs for 15$.Complete equality isn't compatible with democracy, but it is agreeable to totalitarianism. After all the only way to ensure the equality of the slothful, the inept and the immoral is to suppress everyone else. - Iain Benson

I toss one of these in each ammo box. Only $5 each and they can be reused forever.

Re: Dessicant?
I don't use dessicant in my ammo cans. Think about it, you fill a can full of ammo, you close and seal the lid. How much moisture laden air will be left in the can? Probably not enough to do any damage. Of course if your can has a leak, or you store you ammo loose or just on a shelf in the basement, etc, then you could have problems. In a tightly sealed can however, nothing to worry about.
BTw - you can buy dessicant in varying sizes at Home depot, or even an RV place......I used to buy this dessicant for our Pop-up camper that would literally draw cup fulls of moisture from the air. In a gun cabinet, etc these would last a while.Last edited by Poonie; July 17th, 2009 at 09:46 AM.

Re: Dessicant?
Just picked up a few packs, one for the gun safe, one for ammo cans.
At 3 bucks a pop even if its not necessary, I feel better.
Thanks for the suggestions.
