Default Question for the home or professional electricians.

Since I've been unemployed for almost a year (gettin' on my wife's nerves, so she wanted me to find something to do and I am gettin' close to retirement anyway), I've been finishing my full walk-out basement. I'm adding a 100 amp, 6 spaced sub-panel next to the main panel in the basement (2 spaces open, I'm adding a 100 amp CB to the main). I plan on using 2 of the spaces for 2-20 amp CBs for the new workshop and divide the others throughout the basement. The other spaces will be 4-15 amp CBs, thus adding up to 100 amp. I'm adding a full bathroom w/heated mats installed underneath the tiled floor, 4 light fixtures, fan and of course GFI.

My question is, is there a guideline to use on how many outlet or light fixtures that should used on each of the remaining 15 amp CBs?

Just run 12 wire and make it a 20amp circuit and you can put 6 on there.

Lighting? Add up the draw of each fixture and don't exceed 80% of the wire's capacity.

    14 wire=12 amps
    12 wire=16 amps

But that is a hell of a lot of lighting if each light bulb takes up 1 amp.

Also, check your local code; you may need a bigger box, since you have to leave some spots open for 'future needs'. Doesn't make sense, but

I didn't write the NEC...I just teach it...

Your plan sounds good. The only thing I would change would be to put the bathroom GFI and heated floor matts on a 20 amp cb. Everything else is good. The NEC doesn't apply to the do it yourselfer in your own home.

Make sure you put in 20 amp switches and outlets.

    Obvious but can be overlooked!

Its better to install a bigger box then what you will need to begin with. This way you have room for a few more circuits if you need them later.

    Really?

Are not local permits required which in turn would cause the NEC to apply?

    The NEC always applies.

A DIY homeowner wouldn't need permits.
