    Default finally did it

I've been lurking here for a while as well as a few other gun forums trying to learn all I can as I'm new to handguns. The great thing about the PAFOA forums is that I can also learn about the gun scene in my local area. Lots of great info here. Yesterday I finally got off my butt and took a handgun basics course at SPAG then spent some time shooting. I don't own a handgun yet, I figured I'd rent a few different guns in the beginning to try and narrow down my choices; I already have a general idea of what I want. The folks at SPAG were great to work with. I shot a full-sized Glock in 9mm yesterday, model 17 I think. Nice gun but not my cup of tea. Before I left the shop I handled a sub compact Glock that felt better in my hands.

My targets were somewhat respectable for a first time shooter. I'm hoping to get to the range once a week or so to practice. At some point I'll probably check out Firing Line too just so I know my options but I really like SPAG and will likely get a membership.

Looking forward to becoming more active here.

Welcome to PAFOA!! and to shooting.

Sounds like you are doing it right by getting some instruction first. Do yourself a favor and try a bunch of different makes and models before you buy one. Handguns are all very different and fit everyone differently. I don't shoot at SPAG but I know there are many PAFOA members that do. I'm sure they'd let you try out some different guns if you ask. Just be sure to use your ammo.

I shoot at Classic Pistol in Southampton. If you are ever going there, PM me and you are more than welcome to shoot what I've got.

    Good luck

    Thanks very much, will do.

By the way, I'm sure lots of newbs say this but two observations from my first shooting experience:
    1. the recoil was far less than I imagined
    2. the "bang" was far more loud than I imagined

Yep, movies do not paint the whole picture! lol

If the 17 was to big, try the 19. It is a very nice size.

As I was leaving SPAG I got to handle the Glock 19 and it was a much better fit. Not sure what I'll get for my first one though. I've been doing a lot of research and trying to narrow it down. So many choices... : )

Welcome! I have a G19 you can try. SPAG also rents a G19, but 2nd generation and I HATE rental guns. They are always so grimy. I had the mag in the Springfield 1911 at SPAG that literally fell apart upon inserting into the well. I'll be at SPAG early next week. Let me know if you want to come out. It'll save you $10 in range fee and I can get rentals for free.
