What can I legally have for defense in NJ, NY, NYC?
What can I have other than a smaller than 3'' knife and spray to defend myself when traveling on the east coast i.e. Philly, NYC, NY state, and NJ? How about a crossbow? This would be extreme but alot better than nothing at all...

When I have to go to those places, it's a cell phone, a Surefire and Condition Yellow.
I haven't carried pepper spray there, but according to my research, it's legal. Please do your own research on this.
Subway or bus? Stand or sit at an end.
Walking. Wallet in front pocket. Wife/Daughter's purse close to body.
Restaurant. Back to wall, view of as much of the place as possible.
etc. etc.
But really, these places are actually quite safe. As a tourist, you probably won't be going to the unsafe areas. And even these areas are not what they were in the seventies and eighties.

The truth is, you can carry nothing at all (excepting Philly for the moment. It is still in PA, after all). Anecdotally, when I lived in NY I used to keep track of the items that the paper would report in crimes that included a charge of "carrying a concealed weapon". Nothing scientific, just a mental checklist of just how arbitrary the enforcement of weapons laws can be. My personal favorite, some wacko dug a brick out of the ground and killed someone with it (short version of a long story). You guessed it, the brick was a concealed weapon!
The way I figure it, if they arrest you for anything after an altercation, you are ALSO getting charged with weapons possession. Doesn't matter worth a damn what you use to defend yourself. Of course, if what you are carrying is actually illegal, you're double screwed.
A crossbow???? That was a joke, right?
Just my .02

The only thing you can carry in NYC for protection is a condom! If the governor and mayor get their way, they'll probably be outlawed too!
You cannot carry any kid of weapon in NYC. Carrying any kind of knife now in NYC can get you into deep doo-doo! I have a friend that has just been charged with a felony because of a 3 inch knife.
You're best bet is to completely avoid NYC.
You are kidding about the crossbow, right?Last edited by Michele; July 5th, 2009 at 04:28 PM. Reason: oops spelling

As I see it you have two options for NJ, NYC.
1. the ability to run REALLY fast.
2. The ability to bleed REALLY slow.
For Philly just get your LTCF and OC/CC as you chose.
Just remember when you call 911 to tell them what color chalk you would like around your body because that's about all their good for here.
My advice is to avoid NJ, NY all together, you have a beautiful state that honors you right to protect yourself, stay there.
Nothing good can come from visiting NJ/NYC.

While I agree everybody should be allowed to carry everywhere and in any State, Your brain and your awareness are your best legal weapons in the States you mentioned. I'll say it first, use your brain and stay away from those States. OK now that that is out of the way. It's not like you're going to go to NJ or NY and bingo you're going to be a victim. Just don't venture off into undesirable neighborhoods in the City. And if you choose to go to NJ, I'm sure your place of choice is not going to be Newark, Camden, or any other fantastic places like that. Crap can happen anywhere so being aware of your environment is important no matter where you go and whether you're carrying or not. It doesn't hurt to being able to handle yourself if you have to. A hyper-extended knee cap and a quick upper cut works well lol.

Whenever i leave the state and go somewhere else such as NY or NJ my trick knee acts up and I have to use my hardwood walking stick/cane. It really sucks to leave the state and have a bad knee.
