I say, buy the hi point 9mm and that will be your learning platform that most of us have gone through. The 9mm ammo is at least available. The hi point is the lowest quality gun that you can own in my opinion, but it sounds like you need to "learn for yourself." So, go buy it and go through the experience for yourself. Personally, when I was your age I bought a Davis .380 and a Jennings .22, each for around $100 each. Great learning experience since you "learn" what a crappy gun really means. Then, you end up dumping them or giving them away and buy a used, higher quality gun. Sometimes, you have to experience a "low"....to desire the "high" in gun quality.

He got a Ruger. Much better decision than a Hipoint in my opinion. Good decision. Im a recent convert to Ruger, so Im a little bias. Good luck and be safe.

I also recently purchased a S&W Sigma 9mm and even more recently, I went and picked up a Taurus Millenium Pro PT145... I had to get the PT145 after I got to fire a few rounds with one at the range...Fell in love. It fits in my hand so nicely.

Since the Hi Point 380 is the same exact size as the 9mm you would be much better off money wise with buying a 9mm Hi Point. Used prices are the same for the 380 or the 9mm. Why folks can't find 380 today is a question? All the Walmarts in the Philly burbs carry 380.

If you are only waiting a month to get a Glock, use the $100+ not buying a Hi Point but putting it into ammo for the Glock.

.25 ammo is also harder to come by and expensive as well.
    Try a 22.

Almost 14 year update…I started with the P85. Loved it. That was a start. So much more to talk about now.

    AND....right now....good luck finding .380 ammo.

I would recommend looking at moderately priced decent guns...like Glock,XD or CZ. 9mm will be easier to get ammo for in the short term & gives more bang for the buck than .380.

For a first handgun you can't go wrong with a Glock 19 or 23. For a revolver, you can't go wrong with a Ruger sp101. To save some money, look for a used one.

I would avoid Hi point. DON'T BUY JUNK.
    Disagree

I have an array of hi-point pistols + carbines. They all go bang every time. They hit what they are aimed at.
Hi-point is a USA manufacturer (Mansfield Oh) and they have a lifetime warrantee.

    Make a great truck gun.

.380 is not enough caliber in my opinion. 9mm is my personal minimum.
.40 and .45 are my preferences.

Holy crap I just realized its a 15 year old thread!
