Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
I just came back from a 2 hour shooting session at Greater Pitt Gun Club.
The range seemed to have been kept in pretty good shape, not overgrown with weeds. I was only at the pistol bays.
I must have just missed Frenchy. Tex told me he just left.
The membership card I sent money in for last summer will be good for the next year (June 2008) barring any problems keeping the place open.
I didn't ask Tex any particulars, just that I was happy he reopened the place.
The trip out to the range also had a few changes. The airport connector which rerouted the trip to the Bavington exit and doubling back to the Mousetrap bar was complete.
You can now use the old route of getting off at McDonald Midway, making 2 quick lefts onto old Steubenville Pike to the Mousetrap, making the right onto Robinson Church Rd to get back to the range.
The ride to GPGC was 26 minutes and 22.3 miles as opposed to 46 min and 39 miles to Pitcarin/Monroeville. Only one traffic light from my house to GPGC
I went primarily to work on my pistol handling. I shot 2 Glock 23's and a Kahr P9 Covert.
My reloads were less than smooth. I was going to possibly change from shooting with my dominant damaged right eye to my weak eye but I think I'm going to stick with what I've been doing for the past 7 years.
The groups at 5 yds slow fire were about the same with all 3 pistols but went considerably downhill with increased speed. I also tried point shooting. At 5 yards, it was OK but beyond as with increased speed, I sucked
Here's a few pics:
This is a shot of three of the 4 open pistol bays and the building is the enclosed pistol bay(not inside but enclosed for about 15 yds)
This is a 40 yd pistol bay. The two next to it are 50 yds and the last open bay is 25 yds.
The next two shots are of the partially enclosed pistol bay
This is the clubhouse
I hope the club stays open just for the drive but time will tell.
The shorter distance and virtually no traffic is a big time bonus to get out and shoot.

Let me add that you should call Tex before traveling out to the range to verify it's open when you want to go there.Last edited by 27hand; May 27th, 2007 at 05:10 PM.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
I must have just missed you when I stopped out. I read Frenchies post about the message he got from Tex. I ran out to check out the situation. I was the only car in the lot. The club house was locked up but there was a light on. I didn't see Tex but since as you said the grounds were in good shape I was convinced it is probably open for good. I'm going back out sometime this week and get some trigger time in.
I hope those of you who took Greater Pittsburgh for granted have learned your lesson.Last edited by ALS; May 27th, 2007 at 05:26 PM.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
ALS, I was parked down at the pistol bays from 1:30 to 3:30. I was the only car there,
There were some people shooting sporting clays (or something shotgun oriented) when I got there.
I saw Tex pull in just before (about 3:30) I left so he may have gone out.
Quite a bit of brass was on the ground and it wasn't discolored so someone has been shooting there.
Don't forget to call there before you go out. I'm not sure of what policy is at this point.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
That's great news, I'll definitely try to make it out there with a couple friends this week, maybe even tommorow if Tex is going to be around? What's the phone number so I can call ahead? I know it was in the other thread but that post seems to have dissapeared or something...

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
27hand I think we need to get a PAFOA shoot organized out at Greater Pitt in the next few weeks. Being closed for close to a year Tex could use an instant increase in business. I'm going to plan a quick trip out Saturday morning to see what's up with hours and days open.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
I've also been waiting for this since I got my shotgun awhile back, they had just closed when me and my bud were going to start shooting. Can someone give me the exact address plz and if you got it a price list? I am now EXTREMELY EXCITED. This is much closer to me, but I do not remember the drive when we went out and they had been closed.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
I can only hope this is just not for short term.
The address at the club is:
920 King Road
Bulger Pa 15019
724 796 9111 Talk to Tex.
Frenchy is the webmaster for the club so I'm sure he will post some info once he has some definite information.
The directions : I didn't check milage so this is approximate.
Parkway West toward airport.
Take the exit for 22/30 west and go about 3 1/2 miles to McDonald-Midway exit.
Make 2 immediate left hand turns at the end of the exit ramp. That will put you on Old Steubenville Pike running parallel to 22 (rt 30 drops off at the Imperial exit)
Continue about 1 1/2 to 2 miles to the Mousetrap Inn and make a right onto Robinson Church Rd.
Go about a mile and as you go downhill, king rd will bear to the right off Robinson Church.
The entrance is about another 1/2 mile. on right.
As I stated, I don't know Tex's current membership policy and i apologize for not getting more info.
I'll try to call him tomorrow and get additional info.
ALS The next scheduled Pafoa shoot is at Pitcarin/monroeville sportsmans club on the 10th. I'm not 100% sure I'm going to make that as i'm on vacation for the next week and a half from Friday.
I will ask Tex about the possibility of having one at this club.
About 3 years ago we had a Glocktalk shoot there and about 10 guys showed up.
(one guy,his wife and 2 dogs came from out near Philly)
later guys and hope for the best.

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
Skuggi,
I used to go that way all the time.
I was under the impression that Bald Knob road no longer continues to King rd.
Last year sometime this was closed. I don't know why.
Do you know for sure that road is passable to King Rd?

Re: Greater Pitt Gun Club OPEN
well if the county/twp/municipality or what not did it's job and updated it's listings like they're federally required to, then yea. But thats one reason I hate going by just my GPS it rely's on people doing the proper paperwork. Let me do some searching and I can try to find out.
