Default "Motovational speaker" tells kids to take drugs and have sex.

    Some background:

It's 12:30 AM and I'm browsing around on Digg when I see this headline 'Have sex, do drugs,' speaker tells students

    And I'm all like "What?"

So naturally I have to read the article. i don't think it was as bad as the spin seems to be, but we will never know unless we were there or get the whole story. The line that really jumped out was:

I am going to encourage you to have sex and encourage you to use drugs appropriately, Why I am going to take that position is because you are going to do it anyway," he continued. "I think as a psychologist and health educator, it is more important to educate you in a direction that you might actually stick to. So, I am going to stay mostly on with the sex side because that is the area I know more about. I want to encourage you to all have healthy, sexual behavior.
The panelists irresponsibly advised Boulder High students to have sex and use drugs," the family responded. "Teenage abstinence was dismissed as an unwise choice and indicative of religious hang-ups
Okay, I'm with you so far. I think abstinence only Sex Ed leaves a lot to be desired. And you will do it anyways so we might as well try and keep some V.D. off your junk.

Drugs, I don' know about that one. I don't do or like drugs, and I'm not going to tell you that you can't. But man, that's pushing it a little for me. I mean it's natural for us to want sex. I want sex with that cute redhead in the mall with the big azz, and that sweet little asian girl who cuts my hair. The haircuts suck but I love the way she runs her fingers through my hair and comments on my cute little baby face. And she always takes the time and puts that awesome pomade before she tells me how hot my hair looks for my wife. My wife.

Oh, where was I? Sex is hard wired in there pretty good; but not as much for drugs. Anything that mind altering takes more of a conscious decision or peer pressure. People don't lie awake and fantasize about snorting coke unless they have decided to try it.

Now gay sex is pushing it a little bit more. I don't know if you are born gay or learn it (have had a few gay friends give me different answers) but I don't know if I want someone telling my son to experiment either. If he's gay it's one thing, it's quite another to be pushed into it.

I could rant for a while. What are your opinions. Where do we draw the line on how much of real life can be brought up in schools? You have to admit some of this is a little edgy of not more.

You'd be amazed. Our brain has evolved to handle certain drugs in particular (receptors, chemicals and whatnot).

Humans have been elevating their consciousness since we climbed down from the tree and started walking upright most of the time.

Honestly, I give kudos to the speaker. He's telling it like it is. Abstinence only education is one the most ignorant concepts I've ever heard in my life. Whether it be for sex, drugs or guns.

I am SO happy we don't have children right now...

This crap really bothers me. What bothers me the most is that much of it is done without the parents knowledge. (see THIS little gem linked within that article http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=54683 )
Another HUGE problem is that many parents have no clue what is going on in the school because they don't take the time to ASK.

Students are in school to be educated, not indoctrinated.
It's bad enough that it happens at the college level, but to plant these seeds in these little kids heads is wrong. Essentially, the schools are telling the parents, "screw you, these kids are OURS now, and we'll decide what is right and wrong."

    Ya know what, though?

I'm pretty skeptical of any article that cites as a source "an unidentified contributor on a local blog".

I call BS on the whole story until a more reliable source verifies the story.

Not sure what society can expect when kids see this "Smilin' Bob" guy and all of these Viagra commercials constantly. How can you tell kids it's ok to take prescriptions recreationally but not smoke some nuggets?

I know kids are gonna have sex and smoke some weed and maybe toot every now and again but I don't think it should be endorsed. The last thing we need to do is give excuses to kids for doing things to excess. It's one thing to look the other way when a bunch of kids get together to pound a keg, it's quite another to encourage it.

I actually saw some tape on this on one of the news channels last week. One of the kids brought their cell and taped what this guy was saying. Very strange.... I'm not real sure that I would have been happy if my daughter was in this class.

Fair enough. The other side of it is the parents who blow up with every little thing they do not approve of and force the school to bend around their own sense of morality. It's a very fine line in the school districts, and that's why I'm glad I didn't go into teaching.

Well, to be realistic here, there's a LOT more parents who scream about their kids being punished for doing wrong.

My neighbor is a school principal. You'll never convince me that a few parents are twisting the school into preaching "morality"... it's very much the opposite.
Also, how often today will you see a school official in a news conference stating that "We were forced by one angry parent to include Jesus in the "holiday play" and change the name back to "Christmas play"? Not happinin'... again, very much the opposite happens.

    BINGO.

I was thinking... If these "educators" feel so strongly that the kids should try/experiment with sex (gay/straight/other) and use drugs "appropriately" (WTF?) why do they not lock the doors, tell them to get naked and start passing out the "appropriate" drugs? Hell, give 'em each a six pack too!

WHY would they not DO THIS? WHY? WHY? WHY?
Oh, that's right... because it's illegal!

Hmmm... How can we get around this? I KNOW! Let's just TELL THEM to do these things later, at home or in a stranger's house... anywhere really, just don't let your parents find out who told you to do it!
Whether the "teachers" agree with the legality/morality of child-sex, underage drinking or illegal drug use or not isn't the point. The point is they have no business encouraging kids to do things that most of their parents don't want them to be doing... some of which is not a moral issue... some of it is illegal. (whether you like it or not)

"We were forced by one angry parent to include Jesus in the "holiday play" and change the name back to "Christmas play"
Well, we did have the parent who wouldn't allow a Christmas tree, or the colors red and green because they were Christmas related. Her perfectly acceptable holiday colors were silver and blue. And she was happy to include a menorah for the celebration. One teacher slipped up during a conversation and said the word "Christmas" and was reamed out for close to 45 minutes for being "insensitive", and her child and religion were not being given equal representation.

Then we had the kid who swore at me, then turned around and blamed me despite four other teachers who saw the truth. His parent who didn't believe any of us tried to end my teaching career right there on the spot because "her son would never lie". Without the support of the people in that building who knows what would have happened.

And the guy who called the school every night with complaints over his daughter's homework. Everything from math problems too hard or not challenging enough. Phys Ed classes that had too much male/female contact. Social studies that didn't have enough about prohibition (and how it was the right thing). And of course the science and how evolution is "just a theory" and how dare we teach it in school and not include his "science" of creationism because it's just a valid. Sorry dude, theories are not equal. Give me some proof and we will consider it.

So those are some personal examples from my very brief experience in the schools. Maybe I am biased, maybe I just got the worst of it, and maybe I am wrong. That is just my experience.

Sorry EM, I actually do agree with you on this one. Thanks for letting me rant.
