Pa. newspaper ad calls for Obama's assassination
Newspaper ad calls for Obama's assassination
Friday, May 29, 2009
The Associated Press
WARREN, Pa. -- A northwestern Pennsylvania newspaper is apologizing for running a classified advertisement calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.
Publisher John Elchert says the ad appeared yesterday in The Warren Times Observer. It read, "May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!" The four presidents were all assassinated.
Mr. Elchert said the advertising staff didn't make the historical connection, but the paper removed the ad today and turned information over to police.
Mr. Elchert says an agent from the Secret Service office in Erie is in town, investigating the person who placed the ad.
A note in today's paper says, "The Times Observer apologizes for the oversight."

Can you say a public education and graduated High School after 1990?
Yep and we are spending how much each year per student?

Don't care WHO said it, newspaper, individual person or some talking head ... even thinking that is beyond horrific.
You may not like him, that is your 'freedom of choice' BUT talking about, condoning or even mentioning the assassination of a sitting president (or anyone for that fact) is just the lowest thing I can think of. We are a country of PEACEFUL government transactions ... not takeovers, not murder and especially not takeovers via assassinations! The day we (and I mean ANYONE) accepts this kind of hatred as the norm is the day the United States of America is no more, we have become a third world country that doesn't deserve the respect and success we have had for over 200 years.
Sorry but my memory stretches back to the day JFK was murdered ... it was a horrible day, one that should NEVER be repeated again!

I could be wrong, but I don't think this is anything anyone will get in legal trouble over. The Secret Service can investigate but no specific threat was made. I was always under the impression that an actual threat was needed to arrest someone. Yes, no?

'Frain not. Legally, that ad will end up being legally protected speech. It was a wish, not a threat, unless the person who placed it is silly enough to actually speak to the SS without an attorney.
If what you said is true, there would be an awful lot of people in jail over the last 8 years. Plenty of leftists printed and spoke out loud wishes for the death of President Bush.
Do note, I'm not addressing the content of the note, merely the odds of the person who placed it of ending up in jail."Never give up, never surrender!" Commander Peter Quincy Taggart

Re: Pa. newspaper ad calls for Obama's assassination
Insinuating an attempt is sort of similar to making an actual attempt. The wording in the paper does not insinuate a person has, or is planning to take any action. I believe a person could express his/her hopes/wishes without insinuating a plan to do so. Again, I could be way off.
Regardless, as dc posted earlier, this line of thinking is horrible even if you don't like the man. That action wouldn't make anything any better. Would just make everything worse.

Re: Pa. newspaper ad calls for Obama's assassination
Exactly, wishing someone would die is not even close to the word "attempt." Just like Wanda Sykes wishing Limbaugh would have his kidneys would fail is nothing like saying she would make his kidneys fail.
You are right that it would make things worst. For Pete's sake... BIDEN???? WTF?"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
