More than 6% sales tax on guns?
I just bought a new gun today and upon looking at my receipt noticed that I was charged more than 6% tax. Normal? I've never noticed it before.

I figured out I paid 9% after busting out the calculator. WTF?

If you paid with a credit card, it was probably the 3% surcharge that you were hit with. That way, the gun stores don't have to pay the fee for your use of a card.

Re: More than 6% sales tax on guns?
Visa and Mastercard both prohibit credit card surcharges - if you used one of those then the gun store is in breach of his contract by doing this.
I usually don't object to paying the fee when it is advertised, because I know small businesses run to tight margins, and I know how to avoid the fee if I so desire.
In this case I think the store is out of line. They should not be allowed to sneak a surchage into the tax payment like this. If they are charging 3% extra for credit cards it should be made very clear in the store.

I paid cash. The amount of tax is wrong on the tax line. I was charged 9%. Guess I'll go correct them tomorrow. Thanks guys.

The sales tax rate is not constant throughout the state. For example, in Allegheny county, the sales tax is 7%. 6% goes to the state and 1% goes to the county. Did you purchase the weapon in a county where you normally don't shop?

Philadelphia just passed a new budget that includes a sales tax increase to 8%. But that didn't go into effect yet, so nobody should use those rates at this point.
JanSo long and thanks for all the fish.
