Mechanical Fuel Pump
Hopefully some of you mechanics can chime in and give some advice...
I have a 1980 CJ-5 that's been sitting in my garage.... Which seems like forever.
It won't run... It did run..
It will run on starting fluid so I have ruled out the ignition system... And it does already have brand new: cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I assume it is fuel delivery. I drained the oil yesterday and it had a hint of gas in it. So I am going to replace the mechanical fuel pump (the reason for the gas in the oil?). Anyway, I have never had to change a mechanical fuel pump before. Is it really just as simple as disconnecting the fuel lines, unbolting and putting the new one in the old spot? Is there any "trick" to this? The lever from the pump just needs to hit the same spot on the cam as the old one, right?? Any pointers or advice would be greatly appriciated.
And yes I should've probably posted this on an automotive forum. I don't wanna join anymore forums. Lol. And besides I know we have so very competant mechanics on here!!!!!~De-Animating the undead since '08~

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump
that about covers it.
of course there is getting those lines out of the fuel pump, be careful not to twist or break them they are steel (think old and rusty). might not hurt to replace any sections of rubber hose too, or at least check for cracks/dry rot.I just flew the Millennium Falcon through the hole in your logic 2A6X1

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump
A wee bit more than that.
Some pump work with the arm going up, other down. So you will need to figure that out.
Also fuel pressures needs to be in a certain range. Generally 3-5 psi max.
Most mechanical fuel pumps die becuase of two items: valves or diaphragm. If its a stock carb, a rebuild kit for $20 or less will fix you up. Its not hard.... a quick google should get you complete step by step instructions.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump
It's been a while since working on a mechanical fuel pump. Not much to replacing them. Stuck fuel line fittings can be a pain. I also remember having to put a dab of grease on the rod between the pump and cam shaft to keep it up and out of the way during a few installs.
