    Default Game Lands?

    I hunted out near Derry a couple times. In my time wondering there I found some neat stuff and kinda thought I'd like to go back to those woods some day. I believe the land was all marked as State Game land and I was wondering what the legality of carrying while hiking there would be? Not hunting, no hunting license, just hiking around for the day. I'm not sure if spring gobbler is still in or not, but if need be I would go just while nothing was in season.

    it is legal to carry on game lands whether you are hunting or not.

    now, if you are carrying a scoped 8" .44 magnum, you can expect to be accused of hunting with it...so, if it would not be legal for you to be hunting at that time, you might have some issues.

    (this is because there is a BS provision in the game laws that says that having a gun in the woods is considered evidence of "hunting". if you end up in court, it might be hard to convince a judge that you were carrying a scoped 8" .44 magnum for personal protection rather than for hunting.)

    Remember the rules for spring gobbler also.

    Hunting by sitting and calling only.
    Shotgun only.
    No hunting after 1200.

    No hunting after 1200 is good. I'll just wait till after then. Also its a GP 100 with grove rear sights and a 4" barrel so I think I should be ok

    That'd be a good practice.. 1, you wont disturb some guy/gal's hunt. 2, less likely to get shot accidentally.

    In some places if you do number 1, number 2 becomes more likely!

    Yup.. lol A shot across the bow is still considered fair warning in my area.

    =====

    PA law forbids disturbing hunts. And the one and only good thing Clinton did was enact a federal law prohibiting physical disruptions of a hunt, albeit it was apart of that stupid '94 Crime bill.

    I grew up a few miles outside of Derry and as a kid my father took me hunting all over Hillside, Gray Station, etc. When I read your post it brought back some nice memories of that area. I think the next time I visit I might just have to take a little hike through those woods as well.

    It's usually the other way around for me. If I'm doing number 2, I usually end up doing number 1 also.
