    Default Poll - Body Armor

PARADE Magazine | Why Criminals Are Buying Body Armor

Why Criminals Are Buying Body Armor

In April, 16 people, including three police officers, were murdered in separate incidents in Binghamton, N.Y., and Pittsburgh. In both cases, the killers wore bulletproof vests. Federal law bans violent felons from owning body armor, and many jurisdictions have laws that criminalize its use in the commission of crimes. But while there are no hard numbers on how often criminals employ body armor, police increasingly find themselves facing down commando-style killers.

"There are no background checks, no federal regulations unless you are a violent offender—and even then you can buy them at gun shows or online," says Daniel Vice, senior attorney at the Brady Center To Prevent Gun Violence.

Should sales of body armor be regulated?(online surveys)
"Why do you need it if you're not going to commit a crime?" asks New York State Assemblyman David Koon, the sponsor of legislation to restrict the sale of body armor.

Nick Taylor, manager of a store that sells bulletproof vests online, says body armor provides potentially lifesaving protection for civilians—everyone from judges to journalists.

Seriously. I live in Killadelphia, Pistolvania. I would wear body armor 24/7 if I had the funds to purchase some.

My math may be a little fuzzy here, but...

Total number of police in America = 800,000
    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_p..._United_states

Total amount of tax payer money just up and gone = $7,200,000,000+
    http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/05/news...oans/index.htm

Tax payer money lost divided by number of police = $9,000 per officer

    Average retail price of:
    FN Five-seveN = $1,000
    DPMS Panther = $1,000
    Laser/tac-lights for both = $600 total

    Remaining funds = $6,400

Maybe if they were more willing to blow money on giving police the proper equipment and training to do their job instead of playing games with the stock market they wouldn't whine about the big bad super criminals with level 3a body armor and semi-auto rifles.

First they don't want people to be able to defend themselves. Now they want to make a law against protecting yourself from bullets. What's next? Must wear shirt and hat with brightly visible targets over heart and brain? Illegal to run if shot at?

What a ridiculous concept. IIIa doesn't stop SHIT. It's there because its better than NOTHING. And might stop some things. But if you are a heavily armed criminal you will not see rent-a-cops attacking from all sides with mag-lites. It's common sense. How much goverment money does it take to train an officer to get his rifle out of his squad car?

That's what they are going to do anyway. Call swat. And let the people who can actually fight their way out of a wet paper bag handle the problem.

That is what they are THERE FOR. You don't rush a guy with a long gun and a vest with a pistol. This is, and will continue to be the most basic training issue. The money is out there. It's just burned up in the .gov resources money furnace. These guys need to be trained to handle themselves in real situations like that case so they are not running into gun fire. As horrible as that is, this is just more knee jerk bullshit instead of dealing with the underlying issue.

    What's new?

YES is over 81%. Keep voting sheeple. Give away your souls for the false promise of protection. Go back to sleep.

IIIa stops everything short of a rifle. Including long barreled SMGs.
