What is the recommended caliber for plinking paper accurately at 200 yards. I wanna purchase a ruger m77 for range shooting and not sure what caliber to get it in.

i have a blast with my savage accutrigger thumbholed stock in 17 hmr.

cheap to shoot and will kill varmits if you want it to.i believe you can get it in 17 hmr in the m 77.

what about 22 or 223 for range firing?

I generally just shoot military calibers. 223 out of an Ar or 30-06 in an M1 garand. Pretty accurate for 200yds. I shoot at a SR target. Typical for cmp shoots. You can order them from places like target barn or national target. You'll realize after a while, 200yds isn't that far a distance.

For me? M1 Garand, 1903A3, Swiss K31, Bushmaster AR, Savage 12FV......I have lots of 200yd plinkers!

Seriously, you should check out some local gun clubs when they're having a shoot. Most shooters I know will be happy to let you try a shot or two...it's a good way for you to find out what fits you....

If you're going to reload, .223 Rem components are plentiful (well in normal times anyway) and the round is pretty flexible and flat shooting to 200 yards.

I like 223, my dad has 2 bushmasters, Kinda looking for something different, any input on the 17hmr?

.17hmr is a nice plinking round far better than .22 IMO, my brother in law has a marlin bolt action in .17 and loves it, with a 6-18 bushnell banner on it. He says about 200 yards is the max on shooting groundhogs, depends on the wind also. Great groundhog gun out to that range though, cheaper than .223 and better impact than a .22.

Centerfire, you can shoot just about anything to 200 yards, If you are looking for something for plinking that bigger you go the more expensive shooting .22-250 is a cheaper than shooting 300 mag so as far as centerfire for plinking you could go .204 ruger, .223, .22-250, .243, 25-06(my personal favorite because I use it for deer and groundhogs), .257 roberts and maybe even a .270. Those are the most common I would say.
