    Default Ruger M77 308

Is this a decent bolt action gun for a beginner target shooter? Would appreciate any feedback on this before I buy!

I don't own one but two of my friends swear by them. They both have them chambered in 300 Win Mag. I have had nothing but success with Ruger rifles, just don't have the M77. I have not heard any negative reports on them either.

The first gun I ever bought was a M77 in 30-06. It had the smoothest bolt action of any stock rifle at the time (1978). I was stupid and sold it back in 1988 when I was going to buy my first pistol. I really wish I had kept it. I bagged my first deer with that rifle, and killed over 300 groundhogs with it, on the farm. I don't know how they are now, but they used to be awesome guns.

I am not aware of the cost of these rifles, and the way the guns/ammo pricing is going lately I couldn't say. I recommend you check gunbroker to see what they are selling for and compare the prices. I am certain there are others on this forum who could give you some input as well.

Federal hunting loads are about $14 per box of 20 and shoot very well out of my Remington 700. Match grade ammo will cost about $2.00 per bullet/$40 per box unless you find a deal somewhere. I just picked up a 200 rd case lot of Fed Gold Medal Match 175 gr BTHP for $236 shipped about 2 months ago. You can get Wolf Mil-spec stuff for $250/500 rds.

    Hope this helps.
